# 1 Unable to play!!
01-24-2012, 03:53 PM
So, after months of waiting for f2p, I finally download the game (which took a week to download!!).
I go to set up my character, but end up with a human female engineer with all the defaults (when I wanted human male customized!).
However, I then start the game, watch the intro vid..get a scene of my avatar in a black room, then get a message saying server disconnect which after 20 seconds kicks me out back to the log in screen, and knocks out my wifi..

After trying a few things, I added the exe file to my firewalls trusted applications..now I get as far as before, but my avatar is in engineering in front of a warp core! But as soon as I move, or within about 10 seconds, server disconnect again and kicked back out, and my whole wifi network goes down briefly!!
Its really really frustrating, and after all this time waitng, im honestly thinking of just giving up and getting something else to play!

So far, the only solutions ive seen have been connect via ethernet cable (not an option as router is too far away), and use a better internet connection, which is also no help to me!

Anyway, the tracert results seem fine, however the net test im getting speeds well below what people are saying I should...so does this basically mean I cant play the game, and might aswell uninstall it??

The last player I talked to with this issue had hardware problems with their network adapter. Please make sure the drivers for yours are up-to-date and that the hardware itself is functioning as expected.

How many bars are you getting from your wireless card/stick?

As far as I can find, drivers are up to date, and the hardware works fine for anything else, just not this game!

Exact thing happens to me. All my drivers are up to date and everything, but randomly, although more often than not when instancing, the game disconnects and shuts off my router for about three minutes on average. No other process I do online on any of my computers does this. Just STO, which is a real shame, because I was really looking forward to this game...

I showed this to several folks the past two days, and no one has a clue what causes it or how to even begin fixing it. We all wonder why STO is doing it, and none of the other MMOs I have and play do it.

Sorry to rant, but I was really hoping someone could offer a suggestion or something that could be useful to this problem. I hope it gets resolved one way or another, because I really would love to play this game.

Add me to this list of people experiencing this problem. I can log in and randomly (although usually when instancing) will be disconnected and will have to wait for my router to reboot.

My drivers are up to date.

I have tried changing the proxie on the launcher to no avail.

I have no issues with my laptop.

I have a clean install of win7 (no viruses, ect).

I'm on here looking for ideas, and I'm encouraged that so many other people seem to be having this problem, so hopefully the problem is located quickly.

I have had similar problems with WiFi connections with different wireless routers, and various games. The simplest "solution" is to use wired connection for online games. Aside from that, I've found no general fix that will work for everything. Buying router/adapter pair from the same vendor, updating firmware and drivers, etc., may fix it for some folks but not all. The issue isn't limited to STO client either. I've had other game clients time out over full strength wireless signals as well. (Though STO is the first game where I've encountered a very aggressive inactivity detector that may well be what's causing the disconnections.)

Same here. No problems outside STO. It has gotten progressively worse over the last 2 weeks as well.
