Where are you deleting it from? If you're deleting the folder in Explorer, then sure it will redownload it. If you right-click on a game in the client and tell it to delete, it never redownloads it. I've never had a situation where it redownloaded a game I uninstalled, so make sure you're actually deleting it through the program itself.

According to my Steam client I have only played a whopping 5.7 hours... I know I've played way more then that, because my main character has logged in nearly 20 days worth of play time since I started playing last November, and my Klingon toon for about 10 hours. So I don't know where its getting only 5.7 hours from...

When I first bough the game, I bought it from Direct2Drive. At the time I bought it, I didn't know that my LTS would come with a free copy of the game. I simply chose D2D because of the retailer bonus items that came with buying from them.

Now of course, the game is free to play, so that whole point is moot, but when I started with STO, I was playing a lot of Steam games, and I wanted to use their system's community features, chat, and so on with other players. But I was told then that the "Add Non-Steam Game" function wouldn't really offer the same achievement tracking and so on.

Now I can finally download a Steam-functional copy of STO. I'm so happy. If only I could go back and have the game retroactively inform steam of all my hours played, achievements, and so on.

question: was the steam client updated to the latest build?

because pre F2P the Steam client was the same as on the DVD, which means a 2 year old build and after download it would Patch around 8 GB through the launcher, would be nice if the new players would not have to download the complete thing basically twice.

I bought STO though steam originally, but since the client is stand alone I never kept up with the steam version.

Now that might change

There's an interesting picture in the Steam gallery:

Clickie

Anyone ever seen that bridge before? Looks new to me. On the left side you can see at least two ship diagrams, one Excelsior and one Sovereign. The bridge got a defianty vibe to it but it looks different enough compared to the loading screen, especially the LCARS and carpet.

I think it's one of the Defiant variant ones.

Now all I need on Steam is AOE Online, Free Realms, WoW, and Runes of Magic

My Install of STO copied over just fine same thing happened with Champions.
