When I open Steam it says that in order to play it I have to redownload it. But I already have it installed.

A) click "add non steam game" and add STO to the list, which will let you use the Steam Overlay and Friends features, as well as show others when you're playing.
B) Goto the steam store, click download. Pause Download. Go to your existing STO folder, and copy it's contents to the newly made (mostly) empty steam folder, and paste it there. Once copied over, resume your steam download, which should go much more quickly. Verify the files, and you should be good to go.

P.S. I love me some Steam.
Try this. I'm not sure about B, but if it works, go for it.

should be Crogram Files (X86)\Steam\steamapps\common\star trek online
if it's a Cryptic disc install it will be under C:Users\Public\games\cryptic studios

that is if you are using windows 7

the quote in your post does not state where the steam folder is. I want to try this, where do I paste the contents of the sto folder that is installed by the f2p client installer...?

nvm found it lol. how do I get it to verify the now pasted files and patch from there?
