I was using an Odyssey for STFs up until a couple of days ago. I've now moved onto an escort and the difference is night and day. In retrospect, the contribution I was making in the Odyssey was pretty crap (apart from the heals to teammates; if you're doing STFs in an Ody without throwing heals around you're dead weight IMO). Since getting an escort I've found successful optionals are much, MUCH more frequent. Would recommend getting an escort if you're doing STFS.

Some good ideas here..

I always want to be the very best. The best that ever was, actually.

As a Tac captain, I got owned in the Oddyssey my first time through Second Wave. It's hard to say way, could be that I had a bad shield (was using a resilient with about 3000 less than my covariant), or that a stray Fire at Will ****ed off the dreadnought and her boyfriends.

What happens then is a mess, you die, and respawn RIGHT ON TOP of the dreadnought and her boyfriends, who are still quite upset that you came and rattled their cages. It took 2 or 3 attempts of Evasive (and 1 attempt of slotting a BOff with Scramble Sensors), to get into a clear spot to start again.

After that incident though, it was fairly easy to clean up the fighters then rescue the escaping ships. Incidentally, this was the only ship I sucessfully rescued ALL of the escaping ships with.

MY crew setup:

Universal: Tactical - BO1 - BFAW2 - HYT3
Tactical: HYT1 - TS2
Engineer: EPtS1 - ET2 - BP2 - EWP2
LT Sci: HE1 - ST2
EN Sci: Polarize Hull

Equipment:

Deflector and Engine - Breen
Shield - I am still working on this. So far I have tested the Reman, Breen and Aegis shields. Each has their advantages (Reman - highest rating, Breen - 5% absorption, Aegis- 7.6 Shield Performance and Systems) and it may take me a lot of trial and error to see which way I want to go.

Consoles (all blue MK X-XII):

Eng: Diburnium Hull Plating - SIF Generator - RCS Accelerator - Neutronium Alloy Plating
Sci: Biofunction Monitor - Assimilated - Power Insulator
Tac: Warhead Yield Chamber - Directed Energy Distribution Manifold

Weapons (99% Purple MKX-MKXII):

Fore: Pol Beam - AP DBB - Pol Beam - Quantum
Rear: Plas Beam - Plas Beam - Plas Beam - Hargh'peng (being the only blue)

I genrally try to keep various beams onhand to suit my situation, so this is only the weapons setup I have now. I may swap out the AP DBB for a beam array, as even with the RCS accelerator, it turns like a barge in mud, and it's tough to line up the DBB.

I MIGHT replace the Hargh'peng torpedo. So far though it has been working well for me, it has a nice damage output (with free radiation), and a halfway decent refire rate (15 seconds). But it doesn't take advantage of HYT. I am considering thowing in my old purple MKX Tricobalt. The refire rate (of a minute) is aweful, but it usually packs enough punch to knock most things out.

I know there is better stuff, but I don't generally have time to STF so this is the best I can go with, but I've gotten used to this setup working in most other cruisers, so it's only a matter of time before I get the hang of it in this.

EDIT: Little more info

Im still learning how to set up ships so bear with me:

Engineering Captain:

LtC Universal Engineer EPTW 1, ET 2, EPTS 3
Lt Tac: Torp Spread 1, Tac Team 2
Comm.Engineering: EPTW 1, EPTS 2, EPTS 3, Boarding Party 3
Lt Sci: Haz Emitters 1, TSS 2
Ens Sci Polarize Hull 1

Equipment:
Assimilated Deflector
Assimilated Sub Transwarp Engines
Assimilated Regen.Shields
3 ea Mark X phaser beams fore and aft, Borg quantums up front , Tricobalt aft

Engineering Consoles:
Tetraburnium Hull Armor, Victorium Alloy, Monotanium Alloy, Ablative Hull Armor

Sci Consoles:
Universal Assimilated Module, Bio Monitor, Graviton Generator

Tac Consoles:
Phaser Relay, TCD Subspace Infuser

I like it, I can go into STF's and soak up damage, but it seems the firepower is lacking, I just dont blow up stuff fast enough like I do with my Adv.Escort. They are not damaging me fast and I am not damaging them fast either. Im thinking of using Dual Beam Banks up front to see if it makes a difference. Turn rate like a bus, but I was using Cruisers before I got my Escort so Im used to it. It flies better than the Dreadnought I have( im not impressed with it).

Fore weapons:
2 phaser mk xi purple (borg)
1 phaser double beam bank mk xi purple (borg)
1 quantum torpedo mk xi purple (borg)

Aft weapons:
2 phaser mk xi purple (borg)
1 photon torpedo mk xi purple (borg)
1 phaser turret mk xi purple (borg)

Consoles:
eng: field emitter mk x, sif generator mk x, plasma manifold mk x, eps flow mk x
sci: assimilated console, shield amplifer mk x, biofunction mk x
tac: photon mk x, phaser relay mk x

Boff abilites:
LtcmdrEng: emergency power shields 1, engineering team 2, directed energy modulation 2
LtTac: Fire at will 1, torpedo high yeild 2
CmdrEng: emergency power shields 1, reverse shield polarity 1, aux to intergity 2, aceton beam 3
LtSci: Tractor beam 1, Hazard emitters 2
EnsignSci: Polarize hull 1

Shield: MACO mk xi
Engines: MACO mk xi
deflector: MACO mk xi

I find that this is a good build i might swap out the double beam bank to a phaser cannon purple mk xi (borg), but overal I would give this build a 7/10. I play and ENG so I have my own really good healing abilites and I find this build is a good tank build also with someone my boff abilities I find it is ok at DPS. personally I like the build. I find this build good for PvE never got big into PvP so I dont know about that.

It made sense in my circumstances.

I was flying a D'Kyr as a Sci Captain and I traded up to significantly more DPS with the cost being trading ASIFIII for Gravity Well III. I don't think it makes sense in all positions in an STF or for all possible ship changes. However it made sense for me, so I went ahead and made the change since I was in forward positions (not defensive) anyway.

First, I want to start off saying that I don't run STFs or PvP, so my build isn't designed to do either of those things. It's just what seems to work for me in solo PvE.

Career
Tactical

BOffs
Lt Tac: FaW1, T:HY2
LtCmdr Eng: EPtW1, EngT2, APtID2
Cmdr Eng: EPtA1, EPtS2, RSP2, APtSIF3
Lt Sci: TSS1, ST2
Eng Sci: ST1

Weapons
Fore: 1x DBB, 1x QT, 2x PA
Aft: 1x QT, 3x PA

Deflector/Shield/Engine
Aegis

Devices
Red Matter Cap
Subspace Field Modulator
Various Batteries

Consoles
Eng: Monotanium, Ablative, RCS Accel., FldEmtr
Sci: SEA, EA, Borg
Tac: PR, ZPQC

As far as my opinion on it: it needs work. It gets the job done but could do it better. My weapons are all purple Mk Xs from back before we had Dilithium. Most of my consoles are blue Mk XIs. Not sure if I want to change out the Field Emitter for something else between another armor, SIF Generator, Injector Assembly, or EPS Flow Regulator. Also might swap the DBB for another phaser array, since with this ship's turn rate, I'm rarely pointed straight at an enemy. Everything else I'm pretty happy with.
