# 1 PvP thoughts from a nub
02-03-2012, 09:10 AM
Don't worry, I'll preface this with the obligatory lol-cryptic-and-pvp

That said, I find that STO's still largely a game of powers / piloting > gear in pvp. Yes, I'm speaking as a nub kling that came back faced with MACO feds.

I've played rift, which is basically a gear-to-win game where gear trumps anything else. TOR is quickly becoming the same at the lvl 50 bracket. In STO, I find that I could still have a decent chance at killing folks in my very squishy and obsolete BoP.

It's like my little japanese zero is up against the now superior american hellcats / corsairs, and I could still stand to win if I coordinate and be smart about it.

I'm actually back in STO, for the pvp, because I'm out of my mind. It's the only MMO that I can pick up easily and spend a few rounds in the queues without having to feel like "oh I need x y z to win!" It's fun being the underdog and trying to win against geared feds, because I can still put up a decent fight.

That said, hey cryptic, when are you adding pvp content such as "new pvp maps! (tm)" lolololololololololololol I love you cryptic, even if you don't love the pvp community

Your build is way more important than gear in STO PVP.
Thank God.

With the Field Generator and Shield Emmiter Amplifier changes you can now stack a little more Tank on the BoP, but it has been kinda outpaced over time by some newer ship designs. A fear I've held for some time now.
STill nothing beats the thrill of flying a BoP.

Until GW2 arrives with PvP where gear is completely irrelevant, I'd say STO is least distorted by gear differences.

The BoP's reign of terror is long gone, true, but oddly enough I still see the "klings / BoPs are OP!" in chat.

On another note...
I hate cryptic for their abandonment of PvP for fluff in the RP and PvE aspects of the game. The feds STILL spawn in the exact same location each time in Arenas, whereas the klings can spawn from any spawn ring.

"New pvp maps!" "We're always wanting to improve PvP!" "Soon!" "Your call is very important to us!"

It's like being in an abusive relationship where I only stay because she's the only one that still has a powers / piloting > gear style pvp.

That and trolling opvp.

I like that there isn't a high gear dependency in this game and that experience/skill + build determine the outcome of matches more than anything.

I am a bit skeptical about the Sets, and of course greatly dislike the P2W consoles.
This hopefully doesn't mean that we get more gear dependability: http://forums.startrekonline.com/sho...64#post3990364

Pfft. ya'll know nothing about gear dependency. I'm about to throw down some cash for a racing wheel for Forza 4.. an investment that's going to run me 60 to 150 dollars depending on the wheel I end up with. (I don't know what wheel to get yet... there's so few for the 360 it's STUPID. Stupid stupid microsoft. Open your friggin licensing there's no less than 5 wheels that I'd have bought 3 times over by now had this been for my pc or a PS3!)

see, i finally get a kling leveled and in a bop.

it is a very challenging ship to fly, but i feel as if its gotten harder recently.

i do great pugging it with a couple lolconsoles. but in a team coordinating with a no p2w bs build, i stand out as the weakest chain by far. i'll keep at it tho, much fun to fly.

I agree 100%. Although some gear really helps in the PvP, it's not all about that. It isn't even all about piloting either. In STO, there are 4 elements I see that change the playfield:
1) Gear
2) Pilot Skills
3) Design Skills
4) Teamwork

Overall, teamwork grants you the highest chance to win a PvP match, but it isn't the end-all-be-all element. If both sides have the equivalent teamwork (which in pugs it is very low), then gear, pilot skills, and design skills determine the outcome - at least in 1v1's and 2v2's.

You could have excellent gear, but be an average pilot, and have an average build (design), and be close to evenly matched vs. an excellent pilot with average gear and build.

So many MMO's depend so much on gear to grant consistant wins, that keeps me coming back to STO for PvP. I too play SWTOR, and at level 50 (just like other games), it is gear dependent. Until you get the same gear as your opponent, you are at a disadvantage, even if you play PvP better than your opponent. So those that are "casual players" are always at a major disadvantage in other MMOs, where in STO, that is not the case.

I remember back in December it seemed like every fed escort was invincible. You wouldn't see any shield buffs popping off or anything like that. None of that healthy greenish glow. Now they are back to being like M+M's. Colorful and crunchy on the outside, full of yummy goodness on the inside!

I like the red ones best.
