What I find interesting about this fiction snippet is the reminder that while for us, the source of "the 2800" and the details of Operation Return - including things that only the Dominion side, or the Sisko, could know - are fresh in fannish memory or require only a visit to the Memory Alpha wiki or the DVDs, for the people in-universe, it's on the far side of 35 years of history and other wars. Aside from it being the Bicentennial, how much do you remember about 1976?
("Sacrifice of Angels", the episode in question, is less than half that far back - it aired in late 1997, only 14 years ago.)
.. Man, I wonder how Smiler feels about what happened to his Mirror counterpart?
Smiley is dead--we meet and battle his son in one of the Mirror Universe missions where he is plotting to redirect the Bajoran Wormhole to connect the two universes instead of connecting to the Gamma Quadrant.
When I read 'The Old Man', I had to glance back to top for who logged the report. My first thought was Jake Sisko referring to his father. I agree it more likely refers to Mile O'Brien.
When others suggested Dax, my mind went straight to our resident Ezri and Vesta-class haters who would be embittered if both made an appearance by the end of this story arc. :p Would have been fun around these forums, I'll tell ya.
