So I finally hit 50 and I always assumed that the bigger the ship the better the damage. I played all the way up to 50 going the battlecruiser line and I enjoyed it, but I noticed people claim that these ships (negh'var in particular) are basically the science vessels of the klingon fleet. I'm guessing because of the large engineering slots and people use them for support ships.
I always used mine as a DPS ship, am I wrong in doing this? In pvp I tear it up. After decking out my ship with STF gear I'm routinely out damaging everyone in pvp arenas by at least 100k damage and its really hard to kill me because of the engineering slots, But one thing I love to do is STF missions. Problem is I feel like I don't do enough damage in STF missions. I see the escort classes tear through PVE ships yet in pvp I out damage them.
So what can I do? Do ship types really matter in terms of maximum damage output? Should i fly a BOP in STF missions? I do fine in PvP with my negh'var, but I want the best bang for my buck in PVE missions.
Escorts/BoPs for the most part are the true damage dealers. Burst damages is key in this game. Escorts and BoPs are the most dangerous during their alphas since they have most skills stacked then. Cruisers and SV just do not have the luxury of weapons or mobility and tactical powers to do a lot of burst damage.

Having had a problem getting my Begh'Var to behave like... well, a Klingon battlecruiser, what build are you using?
A DPS cruiser can get high damage numbers on the scoreboard, but that damage is constant damage , as opposed to spike damage that escorts do. It takes a cruiser a long time to kill something that a good escort will destroy in one pass. The scoreboard isn't telling you the whole story, & experienced PVPers know this.
My Engi Tank cruiser often outscores escorts on the scoreboard, but it can't kill anything by itself in any kind of hurry. My escorts can drop a cruiser in 45 seconds if the cruiser pilot isn't very experienced. My cruiser may take 5 minutes to kill the same ship, so the damage numbers from the cruiser are higher, because it takes 5x as long to do the same thing. 50k damage in 30 seconds is way more effective that 100k damage over 2 minutes.
