I've been reading the forums here, and the general consensus is Feds need a new ship type. In the World Wars, the large ships were hounded by submarines and aircraft. This can relate to cloaky Klink ships and carrier craft.

Ship Design Requirements
The Federation is in search for a new classification of starship to fill the following roles:
1. Low manpower usage
2. High defensive capabilities
3. Warp capable
4. Low operating and maintenance cost
5. Reasonable survivability
6. Standby capable in geosynchronous orbit
7. Ship handling should be similar to Science vessels in current operation

Proposed design is the Kratos Destroyer
4 bow
Ship would use dual cannons for bow (Not dual heavy, those would still be escort/gal-x only)
3 stern
1 stern slot allocated to destroyer specific weapon that can be turned off to provide point defense, or enabled via autofire to focus fire. Focus fire would have same effect as a 360 cannon.
3 item slots
3 engineering slots
1 science slot
4 tactical slots

Boff layout-

Tactical- Ensign
Tactical- Commander
Tactical- Commander
Science- Lieutenant
Engineering- Lieutenant

Role- Gives a balanced offensive and defensive mix. The Idea of the ship is it can be left unattended in orbit around federation assets and be called for local or quadrant defense. Crew would feature only Star Fleet officers. Standard sick bay. Science capabilities are limited to required defensive applications.

I know they would probably only be a T-1 or T-2 ship, but I would PAY CASH to have some form of the TOS Soft-Canon Destroyers/Scouts. (even if they were upgraded to look TNG-ish)

They would make great low-level PvP ships and be fun to try and get as far as one can in the PvE part of the game using them.

Aren't the escorts pretty much the destroyers? We have the capital ships (cruisers) and the support ships (science) and escorts of the capital ships (escorts). I'm not sure there is another distinct role possible.

but it sounds like your describing a runabout type ship w/ a lot of firepower? O.o Not to mention, this looks like a hugely OP ship...

I believe the cruisers aren't set up properly to be tanks though, but thats just my opinion. Not enough hull

You can't have to Commander slots. Drop one of them to LTC. Two Commander Tactical slots reek of OP. And change the Ensign slot to an Engineer.

Otherwise, I like your idea.

They can call them Escorts if They like...,

... I just want to be able to fly more of the ships in this game, that I grew up playing with, in Plastic.

I have wanted to see something more along the lines of a Destroyer under the umbrella of the Escort line for a long time. I think a ship with many turrets (or cannons on the side arc) could serve a great defensive roll for clearing fighters, projectiles, etc.

Keep up the brain storming, as this is something I would like to see.

LEGO's are very cool..

But I have a massive Fleet of Star Trek Miniatures dating all the way back to the 70's...

Both Metal & Plastic.

Including all the Galoob MicroMachines.

(These aren't mine, but I have every one of them in large numbers)

Well, there's probably a niche for flankers/skirmishers. Something that's tough enough to operate without capital ship support, but nimble enough to get around the enemy. IN STO gameplay terms, their job would be to 'chase' enemies through evasive manoeuvres to deny the enemy the ability to protect damaged shield facings by turning away (something cruisers are too slow for, escorts don't have the staying power for, and science ships don't have the firepower for).

I don't think it makes any sense for such a ship to be all about forward firepower as the OP suggests though. Weapon arrangements like that are only useful for charges directly towards the enemy, all guns blazing; and we already have escorts for that.

Wow. I used to build my own ships from lego's. I reached the feasible playable limit with them though. 2+ feet is a little unweildy.

Anyway, yes. So what we're discussing is pretty much the excelsior of excorts?
