# 1 Thunderchild-class in STFs
02-22-2012, 09:35 AM
I have a tendency to tinker with builds or concepts that the general consensus will claim is 'not viable for X' activity. In WoW, I said to hell with the 'Druids only heal' concepts in Nilla, and spec'd myself for DPS. Did quite well with it too, in the beginning.

Anyway, I'm a huge Akira fan. I'm looking at the C-Store and I'm pondering, wondering if the newer Akira is viable for STFs. I've got a fully decked Defiant with MK11 and MK12 gear, MACO sets... etc. I know what I'm doing in STFs. But I'm also considering tossing together a Thunderchild and seeing what it can do. I'm curious if it's been done before, and what the results were.

Any feedback is helpful. Thanks in advance.

You might be able to pull off normals, at the most. Elites are a big challenge even for T5 ships, so I don't see it even being an option for T3.

That being said, if you want to try it, go for it. Your teammates will probably hate you for coming with a "noob ship", but if you do have good weapons and equipment, you might make up for the lack of weapons, consoles, and boff powers.

Also, keep in mind too that a T5 Akira is coming eventually. It might be months or even a year or two, but it's on the list.

Would you be running this thunderchild build in STFs with only your friends, or participating in PUG games as well? The reason I ask, is that you could probably find an adequate build with it, but it would still be less effective than a T4/5 escort, and you'd essentially be handicapping your group.

If it's people you know, that's great. I hope that you all have fun. If not, then that's pretty disrespectful to strangers that you'd be playing with. You're inconveniencing them and inevitably stretching out the length of the mission, as well as potentially putting the optional in jeopardy over a stylistic decision, which is ultimately selfish.

Is it possible? Sure. Would you be doing the damage expected from you in the escort role? With only 3 forward weapons, definitely not.

Test runs would be with guilds or friends first. I wouldn't do pick ups unless I was sure that the ship was viable in some sort of alternate role, or in some other way beneficial to the group. If it doesn't provide a plus to a pug, it wouldn't be used.

There is no alternate role for an Escort.

Your role is to deal as much damage as possible, as fast as possible, while staying alive.

Before I get into this, please understand I own and have a softspot for the Thunderchild.

Also keep in mind that a T5 Akira has been mentioned by Capt. Geko

No matter how good your build is, you will be lacking a 5th BOFF station as well as no Commander Level Tac abilities. Overall you have -3 boff powers, two of which are Tac powers - your bread and butter as an Escort for damage dealing.

10K less base hull than a T5 ship.

2 Less guns (-1 fore, -1 aft).

1K Less base shields.

3 Fewer console slots.

On a PUG "viable" meaning you shoot stuff and not die is irrelevant, because no matter how you build it - your team will need to pick up the slack for you.

This is, quite frankly, would extremely rude and inconsiderate to do on a PUG.

With your friends, go ahead and have a blast.

In the meantime, let's both hope that T5 Akira allows for the Thunderchild skin and comes "sooner" as a opposed to "later".

I'll simply point out how I was told in ground elite STFs no having full purple mark X gear (kit, armor, shields, and weapon/weapons) would lead to me dying, or having to get a group that could 'carry' me.

Guess what I found when I got into a ground elite group? I died some yeah, but I also wasn't handicapping the rest of the team.

I'd say go for it, see how well it works. I'll laugh it it ends up working pretty nicely as it'd spite those here going on about how it'd be rude/handicapping.

Just go to DS9 and make up your own team to do them. Say that you want to do a Tier 3 ship only Cure Space Normal STF. You should find people who are interested. I did a Tier 1 ship only Cure Space normal a few weeks ago with a bunch of willing teammates and it was a blast. We had one KDF captains shuttle, 1 Vulcan T'kyr, 2 TOS constitutions and 1 NX escort. It took a while to complete it but we did and it was worth the time spent. We had a lot fo fun and are looking forward to doing tier 2 ships real soon.

If your going for a premade run, it's obviously up to your teammates to decide what ships are eligible to bring or not.

If your queuing up for a pug run, I'd say it's a matter of respect and fairness to bring a t5 ship.

And this is specifically not a question of "but we still got the optional!" or "but I still outdps the average odyssey!". They use the best ship and equipment they have, doing the best they can. But you would be on purpose decreasing your ability to complete the mission and that's imho a no go.

Pretty much this. It's same problem with low levels going into the borg Red Alerts. Doesn't matter that they get leveled up. They are a handicap to the team

you can pull off cure normal as i've occasionally flown the thunderchild using the Akira skin in one and did pretty well. 1 v 1 with a raptor spawn you can beat one

However if everyone turned up in one that would make it very interesting
