If i'm not mistaken, it was the Federation that started the war because the Klingon Empire cleaned out the Undine from the Gorn Hegmony, and this, for some reason, offended the Federations "morals".
Did you fear oppression of the Gorn?
Let us ask Ambassados S'taass if he feals repressed.
Ambassador S'taass, "The Klingon Empire is sstronger than ever."
Thank you Ambassador.

The war is poorly implemented. They could have easily fixed it years ago but Cstore stuff was more important.
From a game lore point of view - I believe Chancellor J'mpok will be revealed as an Undine or at least an unwitting pawn of the Iconians (the true enemy behind all the chaos in 2409). Once that is revealed I believe the Federation and Klingon Empire will formalize a cease fire and begin working together to defeat the real threats. But the problem is, STO's timeline never advances past 2409 so who knows if we will ever see this happen in game.
From a development point of view - I believe the concept of "War with the Klingons" came from a couple necessities:
There needed to be a well recognized low level enemy for Federation game play. TOS heavily influenced this decision and the result was the "Klingon Hub" - the first enemies encountered as you begin playing.
STO was meant to be a 2 faction game from the onset and there must be game lore behind the factions fighting in PvP. Otherwise, PvP would boil down to meaningless war games.
And I don't believe the devs are willing to re-write game lore and the starting missions for Federation play. Not to mention PvP mongers who want MORE war not less. So no, there shall be no peace in our time.
If you feel that the war is un-Trek-like (despite the UFP having engaged in two previous wars against the Empire, despite the Federation-Cardassian War, despite the Dominion War, despite the cold wars between the all the Galactic powers pretty much ensuring that war and conflict have been omnipresent through all eras of Trek).
If you feel that the two tiers/ranks of storyline content do not justify the inclusion of the war..
Don't just argue to abandon the war, argue to heat it up. Demand that the war be expanded. Demand that we get storyline PvE on both sides exploring the multitude of reasons why both sides feel justified, as no war is ever fought for just one reason. Demand that the war be made a central focus of missions through every tier, not just the first two. Demand that we get to fight the battles, defend the planets, rescue Prisoners of War, scout out enemy strongholds, and wage campaigns to turn the tide.
Demand more content, not less. Demand more and better justifications for the war, not a halfhearted and thrown together end to it. Demand a better game, not a worse one.
An end to the war has been suggested and requested several times by many people over the past 2 years. The story has provided us several enemies that both factions can and should team up against together. The story has also provided us a perfect reason and explanation why the war should end. By exposing the true masterminds behind the whole conflict and the fact that we are ALL being played as pawns the story has given us reason to work together. Whether or not the war will in fact end is anyone's guess though.
Personally I would LOVE to see the Klingon war end and the story evolve & move on to the Iconians.

I see all of that and agree. I think the problem is basing the idea of factions around "a totally separate game" the way games like WoW and City of X did.
I think it would have been better to design this game with Feds and KDF as uneasy allies who have eachother's back but kill eachother a lot. Probably could have had equal content at launch if they'd adopted that as the core design philosophy from the get go.
