I heartily endorse Suricata's proposal. Leave the weapon re-name for another time. Move the tier-rebuild to the top of the project-management list. We WANT this, and Cryptic NEEDS this.
C-points do not lose their value utterly after purchase. After all, right now, C-points are over 250 dil. If a lot of silvers buy C-points to fund donations, C-point sellers (who payed cash in the first place) get the dil they want, and encouragement to buy even MORE C-points so they can sell them at 275-300. Those who would be buying C-points for themselves find it even less practical to buy them with dil, and are thus more likely to find $5-$15 for whatever they want to buy. This lets the burden of funding it be transferred to those with money, while they get recompensed by getting dil from those who don't have the cash.
P.S. I have some thoughts on a concurrent change they could make, not to replace/change this, but to complement it, and it could be rolled out quickly/easily. See it written up at this forum thread.
I read this several weeks ago, listened to the interview with Suricata, and have been thinking a lot about it. I like sooo many things about this proposal! I love how it makes many of the C-store ships viable options to buy. I will NEVER spend money on something I'm going to outgrow in no time, and I know that a large amount of people feel the same way. I'll buy tier 5 ships, even costumes for tier 5 ships! But nothing that can't be used at endgame.
However, there are still ships that wouldn't be useful all the way to tier 5. The Exeter and Rhode Island classes are beautiful C-store ships that, if limited to 2 upgrades, would still be useless at endgame. And so many people love the Nova and the Miranda.
That being said, I don't think an Exeter should be able to tank like an Odyssey. But that doesn't mean they can't be useful in another role. Many old starfleet ships have been refitted with modern technology and then repurposed to an assignment fitting to the modern day. I propose that such ships could be upgraded to tier 5 as a Frigate, a new, more adaptable, but not as resilient ship. This should give you an idea:
Since it's the most comparable, let's stack this up against a BoP.
1. The frigate has higher hull and shield ratings, which it needs since they'll have no cloak, let alone a battle cloak!!
2. The Frigate's turn rate is dramatically lower than that of a BoP, so they could easily take an extra device slot.
3. Frigates would not be able to equip cannons, so an additional aft weapon would be appropriate.
4. "Memory Alpha says; "Frigates are fast, medium-sized starships" So I think the smaller cruisers (medium sized ships) should be able to be brought up to 25th century standards and be fitted into their new, era-appropriate role in the galaxy. +15 Engine Power to make them "fast."
The consoles and bridge officer slots are the same as both tier 5 BoP's.
In conclusion, I don't want anyone to feel that this would be taking anything away from the Klingon faction. Let's be clear, this is not a BoP raider at all! It can't cloak, it can't turn on an energy credit, and it can't use cannons. It's just a normal starfleet vessel flying around with its beam weapons, it's just a bit more versatile.
Additionally, I don't want anyone thinking that it'll push science vessels aside. While the hull is comparable, and it has an additional forward weapon slot, the shields are considerably lower, the frigate lacks not only the auxiliary power boost, but also the inherent system targeting and sensor analysis that makes science vessels superior support craft.
So in essence, frigates won't be for dps, they won't be for tanking, and they won't be the best support available either. They'll be somewhere in between in all aspects. Does that mean they'll be mediocre? Quite frankly, that's very possible, but in a balanced way. This would enable those want to be able to play a tier 5 version of their low-tier cruiser to do so, while not making it impressive in any way in particular, but still a functional, mid-level all around performance.
*P.S. To you Nova fans: the Nova class should be upgradable all the way to a Tier 5 science vessel anyway. Period!
This may be the wrong place for this, but I just reached VA on my second Toon....now my first Toon has been Vice Admiral for well over a year and I have quite the ship collection. I started a second toon about 6 months before free to play, and then took a bit of a break. Continuing on now, and just making VA and no free ship? OUTRAGEOUS!!! I can see not giving it to an FTP user and making them buy it, but I am a gold member and cryptics only giving me a couple extra BOFF slots and bank slots? This is crap!! I know they've got to make some money, but like I said.....I"m a gold member PAYING!!! Anyone else find this retarded? Crypitc, YOU HAVE TO DO SOMETHING ABOUT THE CURRENCY BALANCING....IT'S WAY OFF!!!!!!
