I don't particularly like this set up, but I have noticed MVAM Advanced Escorts or Tactical Escort Refits with Hvy Cannons x3 fore is wildly popular such that almost no other loadout or set up can compete with it. There should be several viable styles instead of one that dominates all others.

My personal opinion? It's all situational.

Normal PvE - Mash the space bar until what's in front of you dies. Oh, you may need to adjust your shields every so often, but more likely normal PvE won't even scratch the paint on your hull.

STFs - Sustained damage (I do know people who swear by its opposite, though). Currently made easier with the [Borg] equipment, it has a 7.5% chance to hit a Borg ship for an extra 1000 damage each shot.

PvP - Burst damage (to break through the heals/resistances)

(Full disclosure - I am not a PVPer but I do like to browse their forum because their build insight is excellent.)

Another consideration - AoE damage or single target damage?

I don't think you want AoE damage in PvP, as it does less damage but over a larger area. PvP is pretty hairy though I understand - you won't find lots of people bunched up in one place often. Unless there's a "fedball" I guess.. like I said, not much into PvP.

Also, currently Torp Spread is broken (last I checked) and will actually heal your target somewhat with its splash damage. Direct torp damage still hits them. Once torp spread is fixed I will likely go back to AoE damage for my STF runs.

I've found PvP builds to be excellent in PvE and STF's. Husanak, Zorena, and Hilbert have some good build threads in the PvP forum. I'd suggest starting with one of them and fine tune to your play style.
As a side note, *Good* premade PvP teams can faceroll through elite STF's…with the optionals Try to roll with a good team if you can.

If you have a awesome PVP or STF escort, they work equally well in either scenario. Remember that an escorts role is purely to do damage, whether in PVP or STF. And i succesfully run my same build through every game situation and pretty much OWN my enemy. So my answer is, doesnt matter what ur playing as long as your escort does the highest DPS as is possible. Period.

That's... not true. PVP is generally a higher bar, because of defenses against things like warp plasma and other control stuff.

You can easily make a STF escort build that is next to useless in PVP. (I know, I've done it!)

A big factor in PVP, particularly 'dogfighting,' is doing a huge amount of burst/alpha damage to targets so you can take them out before they recover to tear you a new one. This generally isn't as important in STFs, where targets either don't move or don't move very fast.

Well, my standard ship of choice for STFs is the Fleet Escort/Garumba, which share the same boff layout.

I use 3 DHC up front with a torpedo, and 3 turrets at the back. The boff powers I use are:

Cmdr Tac: TT1, HYT 2, APO1, CRF3
Lt Cmdr Tac: TT1, HYT2, CRF2
Lt Eng: EPTS1, RSP1
Ens Eng: EPTS1
Lt Sci: ST1, HE2

This generally works for me quite nicely as a no frills "shoot them all" build. Substituting high yields and rapid fires for spreads and scatter volleys may work in some situations though. I haven't had time to experiment with carrying one of each yet, although I plan to.

In PvP, the 2xDHC, 1 quantum and 1 DBB up front works pretty well. In STFs it is outclassed by the 3x DHC setup.

Why?

Because with the DBB you can use BO2 or 3 to do that good burst damage to a dropped shield to take out your opponent before they can recover. In PvP this is good, In STFs its not advisable to take that weapon power hit as theres usually a target that requires your immediate DPS attention, and most things dont die from 1 round of burst damage except probes which get thrashed with Cannon Scatter Volley and their own explosions anyway.
