Aint played since release, then a few weeks 6 months later, before rage-quitting. That was in 2010(?)

Was an above average PvPer. On my Defiant, a fully buffed alpha strike would always knock down anyone's facing shield and do significant hull damage to even tanks. (assuming of course they didn't have RSP, etc up)

Just returned and started playing a few days ago. Just today, ran a few Arena matches against the Klinks. Out of numerous ships I targeted, I was only able to knock down a single shield w/ an alpha strike on one. The others, couldn't even knock down one side with a full alpha buffed volley. Laughable.

So are all these players uber awesome now, have I gotten too rusty, or has Pay-to-Win already kicked in?

ps. yes, I've already upgraded pretty much to all Blue/Purple Mk XI's.

The introduction of STF sets has significantly improved defenses without the corrosponding increase to offensive capabilities, with a few exceptions. (Tetryon glider, Tactical Readiness)

This is probably what you're seeing. Shields are way better now, especially since the advent of consoles that add 35% to all of your shield strengths. This may sound like it hurts escorts, but it doesn't, as escorts are now some of the only ships that can kill each other in 1v1s with good pilots.

Around the time you left, IIRC, coincided with the highpoint of DPS. Things got much harder for escorts for a while, then somewhat better. (For a while the game was Cruisers Online.)

Currently, Tac Team instantly re-directs shields to the side taking damage, and everyone uses a console that boosts shields by 35%. So it takes a bit more work.

Its way easy to lose touch with the rules and changes when the rules and changes change so quickly as to be more fluid than water and as brakish as camel p..............

STF's were somewhat new when I was last here, and at the time, frustratingly difficult or buggy (supposedly; I'd never ran any).

TBH, don't have much of an urge to run them now, either. Oh well. Guess I won't be doing PvP either if it means I can't even break down a shield with a glass canon.

They aren't that bad anymore. At least on normal difficulty 15min for a space part with a PUG are enough usually.

The escort is hardly a glass cannon anymore. Read a few threads and go out with some of the old timers in Opvp they can update you on the changes since 1.1 days. Many escorts will out tank many cruisers... they have added defense ratings and all sorts of other goodies since you left... yes Burst is down, but still much higher on the escort then any other ship... but the "tank" on the escort is much much improved. Like I say get on Organizedpvp if your not already and get some conversation going and perhaps jump in a opvp pug made team for a few rounds and get some pointers. The escort flys so much more like a WWII "Escort" It think the changes too the escort have all be for the best.

I don't think pay to win factors in as much as people think it does. I bought an mvam and sucked because I didn't use it the way it was intended but when I play as a tac officer I haven't bought anything and I rock at pvp. Its just knowing your ship and your build. You can kick *** with all basic gear on the cheap.

fight a carrier with tach drones, leech, graviton and some theta, then come back and we'll talk about how much it can alter gameplay
