# 1 Overall most powerful cruiser
03-03-2012, 02:11 AM
I'm wondering what's the overall most powerful cruiser for the Federation.

Excelsior refit or the dreadnought cruiser but with one less console.

In light of the coming Odyssey+1 will either of the two above lose their place to the coming Odyssey+1 speculatively speaking of course.

In short I'm asking because I'm interested in the dreadnought cruiser but the -1 console slot put me in doubt.

Now personally I do not like the Odyssey design very much and the fact that it turns so slow hence mostly used as a beam cruiser. I'm under the impression the dreadnought can turn better and equipped with the lance system so eventhough beams may play a big role in it at least I don't feel like moving an elephant with little biting force.

So gentlemen what's your insights into the Federation overall most powerful cruiser.
I'm aware each person has different criteria to the term overall most powerful, but I'm interested in your subjective opinions and the reasons behind them.

Thank you.

I already find the basic Odyssey more powerfull then the Excelsior refit. My build is a Torpdeo boat and turn rate is no real problem with the right setup.

Dreadnought. All the Odyssey's i've fought against all seem to go on the defensive and in the end they pop. The Dreadnought has the ability to carry some awesome firepower. I have 6 beams, a quantum torp and quad cannons and the lance is a bonus. I would recommend fitting it with Phasers though and use a Phaser relay console to boost the power of that big lance.
The Odyssey does have the better console layout but i always say that for sheer brute force the Dreadnought takes it. Oh and you get a cloak.

Yep, couldn't add more and completely agree. To answer your other question though, the +1 Oddy may well take the Dread's crown, we'll just have to see what they come up with, but with saucer sep it will certainly be more agile, however who knows the cost in terms of power? We should know in a couple of weeks.

Yeah I suspected the dreadnought to hold the edge.

Quad cannons? I thought that weapon was only available for certain Klingon c-store ship which eventhough transferrable but nonetheless not exchangeable to Federation toon.

there is no question that the excelsior is the strongest damage dealing cruiser, in the hands of a tactical captain. but a tactical captain should be in an escort, even in the strongest tactical cruiser your gimping yourself.

an engineer in a cruiser should proboly be in an assault cruiser of star cruiser, they would be better at serving their purpose there. the +1 c store odyssey might 1 up the starcruiser in usefulness, but with the free one its debatable that its better.

actually the galor one ups even the excelsior in tactical ability, but you have to have incredible luck to get one though.

I'm planning to use the dreadnought on both my tac and engineer captain.
However if what you're suggesting was true then I'd call to be a design flaw in the game. In charcater creation the game should mention that engineers should better captain the cruisers while tactical better stick to escorts.

Personally I loathe the segregation and if true it means a bad game design. Might as well NOT give the players any option to choose their starships but fix them based on their career specialization. After all if what you say is true there is little value in choosing otherwise. Logic dictates that either the game design is flawed or the argument.

I hate Galor. Hate it. Would prefer Keldon at th every least. Generally speaking I do not find any Cardassian starships appealing. Especially a Cardassian ship without Cardassian interior, crews and captain.

Having owned and used all the fed cruisers the excel is by far the strongest in terms of firepower, turn rate, and buff setup.

The answer to this question, and many more like it, is actually very simple: Look at the store and find whichever one costs the most Cryptic Points.
