I just hit Vice Admiral as an engineer (woot) and am wondering what to do with myself. The novelty of blowing ships up hasn't left me. I still have some "main quest" stuff to do apparently. I am free to play and didn't get that last ship. I've been eyeing the tactical ships and thinking about shelling out for the Defiant refit or whatever. I don't see what the huge disadvantage of switching branches is. I spent a ton of point in tactical anyway. To ask specific questions, should I buy that tactical ship (setting aside the price, I don't mind supporting this game) and why?

Many Thanks!

As long as you don't use a nothing-but-cannons build, the Defiant retrofit is a great choice. As an Engineer, you'll never be able to match a pure tactical set-up (lack of Attack Pattern Alpha), but you'll have more survivability than they do, and you'll still dish out a ton of damage.

You can still do a nothing-but-cannons build, mind you; it's just that you'll end up utterly wasting a boff slot.

The Defiant is definitely a very fun ship to fly, especially in PVP, and there's no reason that you can't fly it effectively as an Engineer.

Have you been leveling your Engineer using cruisers, though? 'Cause flying an Escort is definitely different than a Cruiser, and you wouldn't want to shell out real cash for a ship and then find you don't much care for it.

I do a lot of Foundry Missions with my VAs. I find many of them are just as good, if not better, then some of the Cryptic Missions. If you don't care about not getting more new levels the Foundry can give you plenty of interesting Missions and combats.

As for whether to buy the Defiant or not, I'd suggest trying one of the free Escorts first. A lot of people have difficulty adapting to Escort combat as it is very different then Cruiser or Sci-V combat. I know a lot of people who hate using Escorts and I'd hate to see you waste your money. Try one of the two free ships first and see if you even like it. If you do the the Defiant, or even MVAM might be a good purchase choice.

Can you list some of your favorite Starfleet Foundry missions? I find the sheer volume makes it hard to find stuff.

The Grand Naga has a fairly good starting list HERE. That's where I started.
