# 1 Buy Ship or not?
03-15-2012, 08:18 AM
Ok! I just gone and brought some Credits with the intention of getting the Dreadnought Cruiser as I was well impressed with the Lance feature on it! Before I parted with my credits I thought I would scour the forums to do some research but find myself bombarded with information overload leaving me totally confused!

I am a Level 50 Engineering captain and am still trying to get to grips with the game. I am mostly doing the story missions and normal STF so not really that into PvP stuff at the moment, so it would be nice if I could stand on my own two feet while being able to extend shields etc in STF. I am currently in a Star Cruiser.

My question is purely what ship (if any) to buy? I have 2k Cpoints. Or should I not buy the ship and buy something else?

Sorry for the really noob question, but I thought I would ask before I wasted my money

The Galaxy Dreadnought is about to go through some changes in the future, in that it's getting Saucer Separation - I don't know if that's a free upgrade or something you will need to pay for, though. That's going to change its play-style somewhat - as losing the Saucer will make it turn quicker, which allows it to bring its cannons to bear much easier then it currently does. Right now you generally need to Tractor things and hold them in front of you or sneak up on them with your Cloak. So you might want to hold off on buying that until we know what the changes are going to be.

I think the Sci Odyssey will get its Sensor Analysis nerfed in the future, so it might not be a good idea to buy that one until we know what's going on with that as well...

The Tac Odyssey is cool, but I tend to prefer the Excelsior a little more due to better maneuverability.

The Ops Odyssey is better then the Galaxy R, IMO. It has the same Saucer Sep, plus better Eng Consoles and Hull with the same general turn rate. Plus the Universal BOFFs allow you to make it more Tactical or Science as needed. Right now it's probably my favorite of the 3 Odysseys.

Thanks for the input. Just seen the Odyssey ones up in the C-Store. I will wait till I get home and log into the game and see what it is all about. I take it the Operations Cruiser would be best for an Engineer?

Yes basically, but thier is no such thing as 'best' in this game, its what you enjoy playing.

The Oddy is not a damage based cruiser, the same way the Galor / Excel and GX are, so Tac Captain dont really gel with them so well.

They are Good tanks, and good Science ships tho.

I've read allot about the tactical oddysey being the worst of the three, can someone help a newbie out here..

Is the 3rd tactical console really not worth it? I was under the impression one of the strengths of the escorts were having 4 tac consoles... Just a bit confusing to me, I know saucer sep grants an awesome turn rate, but it also gimps your tanking ability to right? (don't have a galx). Anyways, not even sure I have all the facts of why one might be better than the other, any help in understanding this is greatly appreciated as I fear I've got the games mechanics wrong...

If the console really isn't that important to dps, are dual heavy cannons and turn rate the only real difference between escorts and cruiser(dps wise) because that would seem to not outweigh the benefits of survivability to me. As in, almost as much DPS and WAY more survivability out of the cruiser vs escort.

Hi, I personally have the operations cruiser, has a bonus to weapons power and turn rate for the loss of a tiny bit of survive-ability, was this close <-> to buying the tactical version, but soo glad i didn't would have taken all day to turn that TANK around XD Basically with saucer sep you loose ABOUT 10% hull/shields but the increased speed & maneuverability give a you a higher base defense level. With the Tactical I think I would find it really hard to defend my weakened shield side as well.

Thats just my personal view

Go for the science variant if you get the Oddy. Sensor analysis is much more for damage than the loss of a single tac console.

Then again they may nerf it when they finally figure that out.

I was going to sit tight in my Excel, but couldn't resist bying the pack today

Still can't decide which one i will fly, but from all my forum trawling, (nerf or no nerf) Sci is the best overall Ody IMO

Of course it always come down to personal choice and bof set up etc, but Sci Ody seems like a great fit.....for any captain (Tac myself)

Thanks for the info, I appreciate it. Was wondering why the tactical was getting a bad rap.

I'm tempted to get the Ody Pack but I'm holding out for the G-X changes. I already own the Dreadnaught and is still my ship of choice. I'm hoping once the changes go live that I can use the Saucer Sep console from the Galaxy-R, which I also own. I'd hate to have to pay again for a ship I already own.

The Dreadnaught is a fun ship but has a pretty steep learning curve. Once you get the hang of it, though, it's pretty nice.
