# 1 Best Fed Beam weapon
03-16-2012, 09:25 AM
I have always played using my fed cruiser with a variety of beam weapons., Tetryon, phaser and disrupter usually..they all have advantages...BUT, If I were going to focus on 1 beam weapon upgrade...say...Polaron?..whyat is its advantage, and how do I best upgrade via consoles and BO, captain skills.

I am level 36 engineering capt, flying a crusier.

The best advantage of focussing on a single energy type is that you can get specialised tactical consoles which boost that specific damage type.

The specialised boost is a bigger increase than the generic energy damage boosting consoles.

If you could fire all 8 weapons at once, wouldnt it be more dps if you had say 4 different energy types, and 4 matching 26% tactical console's for each of those energy types?

This would only be practical on a beam boat

As for which specific type is best...

You should possibly avoid phasers if you want to do Elite STFs. Apparently the subsystem disable proc doesn't work against Borg vessels, so it's a waste. I use them anyway though, IMO Fed ships should have phasers

If you want to PvP, phasers are a good choice. Most people say to avoid plasma weapons as for some reason stacking resistance is common there - maybe check out the PvP forums though for a good guide.

No - each separate energy type would only see the benefit from one tac console, as opposed to one energy type seeing the benefit from all your consoles.

Important exception here should be mentioned: If you use the Quad Cannons from the Tac Escort Refit, or use the Dreadnought Cruiser, phasers are almost absolutely the best way to go.

You should not use multiple types also, cause it will drain your weapon power faster causing less damage to be dealt. Single focus on a particular type is best for either PVE or PVP. As far as type it is like most things in the game which is based on your play style. What do you want to do?

Massive Damage = Antiproton
Shield Damage = Tetryon
System Failures = Phasers
System Drains = Polaron
Hull Damage = Disruptor/Plasma

One or two types is ok if you have the ability / are speced for EPS transfer rates. The more types you have the worse the drain.

Hope this helps more.

First of all you should NEVER mix <snip> damage types.
Edit:(Thatīs what the little sentence with "-10 to weapon energy" is all about.
You are loosing energy thus damage and making everything worse.
)Sry, wrong! Totally misunderstood that.
The best Federation beam weapon would be phasers as itīs their "only" native damage type.

Currently though the Tetryon damage type is the optimal for cruisers. As they are normally fitted with beam arrays, thus the broadsides give you a statistically higher chance to trigger the shield melting special of Tetryon damage.

EDIT: Noticed that the Phased Polarons from the 2900 episode get the same proc too. So those would now be my new favorite beams, coupled with the set.
