# 1 I am a new player, advice?
03-17-2012, 01:29 PM
Hi!

I am somewhat new to the game (I have only been playing for 1 month) and I need advice on my character build, personal equipment loadout, ship equipment loadout and ship choice.

My character is a level 50 Alien Federation Tactical Officer. Using the following four traits:

- Accurate
- Efficient Captain
- Lucky
- Soldier

I choose these traits as according to the STO wiki, this is the optimal trait choice. Can anyone here help me?

This... also, what role do you wish to fill, both on ground and in space, and what is your game style (offensive or defensive?).

Also remember... In a game such as this, there is no such thing as "best"...

For example: Today I took out 2 of the C-Store Oddy's, the so-called OP ships, with my Retrofit defiant on 1 vs 2 combat.

Does anyone else find it amusing and very telling of STO's level progression speed, when an OP states "new player need advice" and you look, and he is actually level 50?

I find that very amusing.

I would advise making sure you didn't skip some story arc missions like the Kuva'mah one, the Undine/Romulan infiltration, the Mirror universe eps etc etc, I have noticed many new players, because the Doff system help you power level, are skipping over semi important story arc big missions along the way.

That would explain a lot in why pug STFs are the way they are, and why there are some really easy kills in Ker'rat.

The Exploration Cruiser. Still haven't decided on what Tier 5 ship to get with my free ship token.

Well, since my character is a Tactical officer, I would assume a tanking role or something similar.

Sure there is a "best" or "optimal" setup. I see that all the other high level players are using the STF purple Mark XI equipment. I would assume that their character builds would be remarkably similar.

Oh, the majority of my time spent playing the storyline missions.

He's both new to the game and he's a LTS? Well if you like the cruiser line you have some decent options, the assault cruiser works well with your tactical abilities, the star cruiser has a bit more survivability depending on how you setup your BOs and there are always the refits exploration class ships if you have the cstore points.

Genrally tacs are assault. They run escorts and strafe the target and deal damage. Escorts hit hard but weak hull.

Engineers tank. They run cruisers. Generally heal and support with beams.

Science run sci ships. They have debuffs that support escorts by stripping shields and debuffing targets. Sime gealing but more of a debuff cleaner for you. (Like removing plasma burn or viral matrix etc).

Again if your willing to use voice chat like mumble my fleet will help you right along.

Personal preference. My loadout is a little strange. I''m a tac running a MVAE with 4x Dual Heavies on the front and 3x Turrets on the rear. All anti proton with 4x mag regulators and a eps conduit. Works well for PvE, but I do change my load out for PvP
Also keep in mind that this took a long time of fine tuning with consoles, BOFF abilities and equipment to find the right balance for me.
Best advice, try a lot of different things until you find what works for you.
