Okay I need help building a very useful Star Cruiser and Assault Cruiser. Needless to say I am not a noob to MMO's. But I am inept at knowing whats best for everything. I never learned how to balance dps stuff and tanking. I'm a tactical officer (48) who just got both the Assault and Star Cruiser for the future. I need to know how to make it work. I am usually the dps or tank of a group. I want to know which direction I should head on these. Please tell me what to put on them for weapons and consoles and devices. I am new to cruisers. Thank you.

Cruisers are for tanking.

Escorts are for DPS.

I run an Eng Tank.
I use the Assault Cruiser because I want Tac Team, FAW & Torp Spread.

Now using the Star Cruiser I need to lose FAW or Torp Spread. Tac Team is to important to lose.

From a Sci Officer point of view
My Assualt Cruiser has Polarise Hull 1 and Hazard Emitters 2.

The Star Cruiser has an extra ensign ability, I suppose I could throw Transfer Shield Strength1 in there, so I could pop an Aux battery and Get a good shield and hull heal but I have other shield heal options that seem to work better.

I also find the Star Cruisers to not look the way I want my Federation Starship to look. Just seems such a departure from everything else.

This is my ship sans Doffs
Sovreign Assualt Cruiser: USS Aramathais (D)

Weapons:

Fore:
1 Quantum Torpedo Launcher Mk 12 [?][Borg][?]
3 Phaser Beam Array's Mk 12 [?][Borg][?]

Aft:
1 Quantum Torpedo Launcher Mk 12 [?][Borg][?]
3 Phaser Beam Array's Mk 12 [?][Borg][?]

Systems:
Borg Retro Deflector
Borg Retro Engines
M.A.C.O. Mk 11 Shields

Eng:
Neutronium Alloy Mk 11 (Blue) or Electroceramic Hull Plating Mk 11 (Blue) (35% plasma resist for STF's)
Assimulated Module
EPS Flow Regulator Mk 11 (Blue)
RCS Accelerator Mk 11 (Blue)

Sci:
Biofunction Monitor Mk 11 (Blue)
Field Generator Mk 11 (Blue)

Tac:
Phaser Relay Mk 11 (Blue)
Phaser Relay Mk 11 (Blue)
Phaser Relay Mk 11 (Blue)

Officers:
Tactical:
Ensign - Tac Team 1
Lieutenant - Fire at Will 1, Topedo Spread 2

Engineering:
Lieutenant Commander - Emergency Power to Shields 1, Engineering Team 2, Direct Energy Modulation 2, Aceton Beam 3
Commander - Emergency Power to Shields 1, Boarding Party, Reverse Shield Polarity 2, (Extend Shield Strength as 4th skill in case I want to swap them around.)

Sci:
Lieutenant - Polarize Hull 1, Hazzard Emitter 2

That allows me to tank a cube pretty much non stop in elite without dying. But there is no way I'll kill thing solo. Now there is an Awkward moment where my cooldowns kinda run out and I've been thinking of swapping out DEM2 for another RSP. I suggest looking for Cruiser Build threads on the Forum or the STF Elite advice threads for build ideas.

I'm also thinking of swapping beams to Tetryon for the minor shield buff.

I'm an Engineer Captain as well and here is what I run successfully in PVE tanking and PVP healing/support.

ALSO, if anyone has a better layout for Tac Boff powers let me know, I'm always changing mine as I do not know what is optimal for PVP Tac powers in PVP.

U.S.S. PHALANX
Captain (admiral) Rogal Dorn

Fore: 1x Tetryon DBB, 1x QT, 2x Tetryon BA
Aft: 4x Tetryon BA

Tac: TT1 FAW1, HY2
Eng: EPtW1, RSP1, EPtS3, ExTS3 (PVE Lt. Cmnd)EPtS1, AtSIF1, ET3 (PVP Lt. Cmnd) EPtS1, AtID1, ET3
Sci: ST1, HE2

For PVP I use AtID1 for getting my torps on target. I am STRONGLY considering dropping my DBB for a second front torp or for a BA and putting in a rear torp.

I am ALSO strongly considering going cannons and turrets with an excelsior retrofit and using AtID + APO1 for lots of turn rate cannon/torp love.

Like I said, anyone have a better Tac boff layout? Any luck with BO1 or 2, Torp spread, or HY1 or 2?

Just a question but why?

Aceton Beam is an enemy Debuff, I'm using it to reduce the damage I take when I tank a cube.
If anything I'm thinking of losing the DEM because I've respecced so I have Flow Capacitors & More accuracy so shield facings disapear.

The other thing I considered is a Frontal DBB to replace a BA to get more kick on the way in. But I think to do that I need to drop the rear torpedo. That also looks to swap the Quantum for the Harg'peng and the TS2 for BO2.

Personally I much prefer the look of the star cruiser, it flows better and fits the general look of the game better than the sovereign (plus I never was fond of the saucer thing most fed ships go with, I like a more alien ship look).

I disagree with the point about cruisers not being for damage though. My tactical character flies a star cruiser and pulls off plenty of damage, at least on single targets. My KDF tactical with a negh'var does pretty well too.

I should really let this one go but...

Are you telling me the Star Cruiser looks more like a Star Trek ship than the Sovereign that is in fact a Star Trek ship from the Movies?

Now that being asked, I know the Star Cruisers are pretty much a love it or hate it ship and I got no problem with what ever choice you make.

No, I'm saying the star cruiser's design fits this game's theme better. We're set in a time period far after the movies, and the sovereign still followed the older-looking star trek design of "saucer, hull, nacelles". Most of the newer federation ships seem to at least partially veer away from that design, combining the saucer (which is usually more aggressive and less round) with the hull for a more structurally sound appearance, and in some cases fitting the nacelles to the main body of the ship in a way that doesnt look as flimsy as the traditional pylons.
