A boat that carries one weapon of every type, or nearly
Phaser, Disrupter, Plasma, Tetryon, Polaron, and Anitproton. Usually doesn't shell out as much DPS as a boat with one type of weapon.
If we are talking Skittle Boats, it's a Rainbow Boat, but replace all Beam weapons with Dual Cannons or Heavy Cannons and Turrets
I'm going to add to that.
Before Season 5 a player had a little more flexability to specialize in a certain weapons type using the skills tree. Season 5 changed that ability to include only Energy Weapons and Torpedos.
Season 5 made multible beam or cannon types a little more viable but still a very poor choice.
Building a Rainbow/Technicolor or Skittles boat can deprives you of the ability to stack weapons consoles depending on your build. (These are also often called Fail Boats.)
Some ships may only have two weapons console slots but stacking two of the same weapons console with all matching weapons will give you a higher DPS rating for one weapons type than if you were using two weapons types with two different consoles.
A ship with four different weapons and four different consoles will have about 2/3 (more or less) the effeciency of a ship with all the same weapons and consoles.
This doesn't mean you can't mix DMG, CrtH, Acc and such as long as they are the same type.
A handfull of people will argue that this isn't at all true and I have seen a couple Rainbows with fair DPS but they are few and far between.
Most players would ask you to think twice and do some research before building a Rainbow and most would ask you to refrain from bringing them into an STF. But it's a free world at least for a few more months, do as you choose.
PS, I recently dropped torpedoes and added another DHC. When I had a torpedo onboard I didn't use a torpedo console in favor of one extra energy weapons console. I got an additional 100 or more DPS in sector space and 500 or more in battle. Just a little something to think about.
The only time it's reasonable to run a rainbow/skittle boat:
You are primarily torps and only slotting torp consoles (because then there are no consoles affecting energy weapons anyway, so go nuts). Note that only slotting torp consoles is a very tricky thing, and don't do this unless you REALLY know what you are doing. (IE: a fixed team, generally, or you are very very good sci boat specializing in shield stripping)
You don't actually have different energy types but the same energy type that happens to look different, like the retro phaser beam array -- it looks blue. So if you have a mix of phasers and retro phasers, you will be shooting blue and gold beams.
(I think there are a small number of weapons like this)
If you are ever slotting directed energy distribution manifold (bonus to all beam arrays regardless of energy) or prefire chamber (same with cannons/turrets), you are doing it wrong.
One of things that really annoy me are those Puggers who only fight the regular spheres in Infected and in KA and ignore the nanite anything. Honestly, I will not fault anyone flying a technicolor dream boat, but generally these are the ones not communicating, not paying attention to what they are doing, and when two of them cannot even kill a nanite generator, I finish the best I can.
well i had lots of those myself, today for example in space elite stf i see at the beginning 2 dreds and 2 escorts, i was so happy it would go fast... nothing more wrong, dreds turned out to be multicolor beams happy boats... and so escorts, my cruiser was doing more dps than all 4 others combined (i parse stfs)... it took 40 minutes with me soloing both cubes... and most of everything else...
If ship is doing less than 2k dps its not a ship, its a fishing boat...
Oh just about every other one I join now. I'm actually in one of those now. I'm not sure what the timer is at but it's well past 15 mins and only one cube is down. I tabbed out about 8 mins in when all three were still very much alive. /sigh
I had a team member yelling at me yesterday for not blowing up the cubes fast enough in an Elite Cure Space PUG run... we were clearly not having much DPS as I was the only tac escort, rest were slow *** cruisers of bortasqu and odysseys with rainbow light brites.
Me and another team member was like, you don't blow up cubes early or else you risk raptor swarms and taking out Kang... and the guy guarding Kang was a Bortas literally parking his ship on top of the Kang and pecking off BoP slowly with his puny disruptor beams so the Kang was getting pounded quite a lot...
We eventually dropped all probes, and stated having people slowly take down the Cubes, someone blew one of the cubes early. Guy just would not get it and after mission failed with Kang, he blamed the whole thing on us not blowing up cubes faster despite the fail screen said the Kang was destroyed
