I think the confusion over rank, profession, and color of uniform would bother me more if it didn't seem so similar to RL arbitrary changes and rules over time.

The only weird part, really, is that Starfleet lets people wear whatever they want. Heck, you could go into combat in sweat pants, if you wanted.

TOS Shirt - medium grey with light grey collar
TWOK Pants - medium grey with light grey stripe

Looks even better on females using the "Wide Collar" TOS Uniform top.

Anecdotal evidence from lots of pugging of PVE and PVP stuff is that the most played class is tacticals, and the most played ship are cruisers. And the most popular combination is tactical/cruiser.

And let's face it, there's a lot more puggers than there are premades, fleet groups, or even semi-premades out of channels like EliteSTF or OrganizedPVP.

I have one of each Career in each faction at 50 and a few others at random levels.

I started with a Tactical when I first played this game, I normally go with pure DPS classes when learning a new MMO.

I personally love Engineer and find them great in both space and ground

My main is my Ferengi Engineer, I flew a DSSV for a long time and now fly a Galor (the Ferengi symbol looks great on this ship).. I look forward to the D'Kora ^_^

But, I see a decent balance of careers when in STFs, everyone has their favorites.

I picked Red when I first started and prefer Cruisers over escorts.

I also levelled an Engineer & Science to try them out, but still prefer my Tac in a Cruiser.
I have an Engineer Klingon at cap also ... gathering dust.

I've tried all three. A LOT of it depends on your style of play. I seem to be finding that an Engineer suits me best. In fact I'm getting tremendous results with an Engineer Capt. on a Tac Cruiser! But I've read posts from others who hate that combo. Experiement... that's the name of this game heheheheh

Tru Dat! Laughed when I found out Kirk was actually wearing green the whole time. Now ALL my Fed Capt.'s wear green. Lends a whole new meaning to "Wearin' O' The Green" heheheheh (maybe it's because, after all, everyone has a little Irish in 'em somewhere )

Nope. My first captain is Tac, and started off in a Cruiser; later acquiesced to the game design and moved to an Escort. But I play my Sci captain almost exclusively now - I find it more fun.

When I'm strolling around in ESD or DS9 or Drozana I see that most players wearing red, and in space there are 60% cruiser-types floating around, so I assume that the most popular choices must be Tac/Escort , Tac/Cruiser and Engi/Cruiser, and the Science-Combinations the least popular on the federation side. For the klingons, I don't know.

My first choice was Sci/Sci, and I love all that science-voodoo-stuff and the more supportive role in Fleet Actions/STFs. Plus the sci/sci-setup has more room/tolerance for skilling faults and noobish skills while leveling up to VA- that's NOT the case when it comes to teamplay though, especially in STFs, but that's another story, you should have learned the pros and cons of your setup and your role in teamplay at the point you reach VA. Hopefully.

My second Captain is now Tac/Escort - very fun to play, but I prefer to wear blue
