As I set outside ESD I observe the following; escorts and cruisers. The game has nothing for science officers. There is no reason to fly a science ship. Everyone prefers cruisers and escorts over science ships.

Now you ask why? Well for one science abilities are grossly under powered. Almost all the abilities a science ship uses is on the same platform meaning you have to wait 15 seconds to use another ability. In pvp that 15 seconds will kill you.

As it stands, there is no reason to fly anything but an escort. And forget about pvp, with almost EVERY klink ship under cloak the science ships are usually alpha'd and then the rest of the fleet dies just as quickly.

So as it stands now, my advice to new captains... go tactical or engineer. You will be disappointed in your science officer.

You'll just be disappointed with a science ship, not necessarily a science officer. I'm loving my science officer in my escort. I love being able to blow the crap out of stuff in space and then switching to healer mode while on the ground.

Clearly you've never tried an MVAM as a sci-scort. Believe me, you can pop carriers and most cruisters like balloons.

My D'Kyr strongly disagrees with you. I do feel that the Devs gave us a big Nerf both by putting all the relevant boosting skills for Sci Abilities at the end of the Space Skills (While limiting how much we can spend in space... ) and they have had a problem with not fixing Tyken's Rift for several Months now since they broke it allowing it to be targeted and killed by any AOE Targeting effect like BFAW and the Point Defense System.

However, Science ships are still very powerful crowd control ships. They can mess up NPC's horribly and are vicious in PvP if you know how to fly them correctly. They are not an Escort and will not deal that kind of damage but they can tank rather effectively and can SHUT DOWN an enemy ship if used right. Just keep one proper adage in mind: An Un-Moving ship is a Dead ship.

When I am on Baloo, my VA science officer in a Recon SV, after all the generators have been popped but before the transformer blows in the elite version of the Infected STF and all those nano-spheres surge forward...

When I drop Gravity Well III with max aux and see five spheres get pulled into a tight knot, and follow with Tykens I, when Grav Well putters out?

When I toss my only copy of Hazards on another teammate's ship and see their hull go from almost 0 to almost full with 1235 HP per tick? The same goes for Transfer Shield Strength...

The last thing I think is that science skills are under powered.

Invest in the right skills and raise your Auxiliary power setting. In a SV my power priorities most of the time are Aux, then shields, then weapons, engines last. In skill point allocation I make sure that engines when set to 25 will register 50 just so I can get directional stuff off more often. Think crowd control and heal not DPS or tank. And when you PUG a STF try to shoot what the escorts shoot. BTW Baloo soloed all the way to VA so while it may take longer than an escort or even a cruiser it can be done, though when I solo PvE I tend to reverse my power allocation priorities. So then it is weapons, shields, Aux then engines, but only when I solo PvE.

Science and Science Vessels are not weak, it is strongest on a team, but not so weak that it will not get the job done solo.

I was crushed to come back to see that Viral Matrix was brought down to a reasonable level.

In a game where DPS is king in PvE content Science Ships are under powered.

Flying solo is about killing as fast as possible, science looses that race.

In STFs its all about...killing as fast as possible, science looses that race as well.

But is it still viable and fun? YES!
