# 1 Scatter Volley vs Fire at Will
04-07-2012, 04:56 AM
I've been a long-time beam weapon user, and had both my defiant retrofit and multi-vector advanced escort fitted with 3 dual beam banks forward, 1 torpedo forward, and 3 beam arrays aft.

I'm thinking about switching to cannons to try and maximize damage output though (and because cannons suit the defiant better), and I'm curious how scatter volley matches up to fire at will. Fire at will is probably one of my best abilities with the beam setup, especially with dual beam banks, and it works well on both single targets and multiple targets. I'm a bit worried that scatter volley wont have that kind of versatility though, and I'm going to end up losing the beam overload burst damage.

This is only for PvE btw, no pvp need be considered.

Scatter Volley does increase firing speed and essentially damages anything in your Frontal Cone. But Rapid Fire is superior single target DPS. That being said CSV is what I open with on Cubes and Gates in ESTF.

So no, this is nowhere near as good as BFaW. I think it's partly to do with Cannons superior firepower.

With a Defiant Retrofit you can run both, with a High Yield and a Torp spread quite easily due to the large Number of Tac skills it has.

Scatter Volley is a AoE, and Rapid fire is on a single target. Rapid fire will shoot faster, bith the penalty being a slightly less DPS

I run Rapid Fire II and Scatter Volley III, but i do like cannons. On my MVAE, I usually run with all Antiproton, 4 Dual Heavy on the front and 3 Turrets on the rear with a EPS Conduit to boost recovery time on weapons power, and 4 MkXI anti proton mag regulators in the tac slots.
It is a little bit of a strange build, but the forward DPS is masive.

EPS consoles don't affect the weapon power recharge time after firing weapons, btw.

I highly recommend a quantum launcher up front as well, then you can have 2 cannon BO skills, and 2 torpedo skills. I personally run 2 CSV and 2 torp spread skills for maximum damage, with TT's in the ensign slots and attack patterns in the rest.

I recommend reading the escort guide in the shipyards section, it had lots of great information.

I like pairing crf with torp spread and csv with HYT, still doing good single target burst and is useful for controlling pop ups like torpedoes.

I was debating switching my flak cruiser to use CRF instead of CSV because she has only one Lt. tactical slot.

But I am realizing that CSV at close range with 3 fore cannons and 2-3 turrets on the back can actually do massive damage if I keep weapons power on MAX all the time.

So EPS power transfer boost will help keep the weapons power beyond 100? I will try that.

Hmm hard call, I'd take AOE over Single in a Cruiser but.

But that's just me.

# 8 Scatter Volley Cone Size
11-24-2013, 08:45 AM
What is the size of the cone for scatter volley?
Is it something like 90 degrees, or is it the size of the weapon arc?
If the weapon is a turret, is the cone size 360 degrees, or does it use the currently selected target and fires a 90? degree cone at everything?

And does scatter volley apply to only the first shot of the weapon, or can a weapon fire more than one cone within the 10 seconds?

The wiki says "Upgrades your next cannon attack." which sounds like only the next single attack of the next weapon like Beam Overload. But I get the impression it is like FAW where ALL cannon fire starting within the 10 seconds get a cone.

Your new so I'll inform ya...posts older then 3 months are left for dead...by posting in these older threads you have necro'd it.

The mods frown upon this as the game may drastically change leaving the older threads outdated.

But to answer you questions

Csv is 45 degrees doesn't matter of its a turret. Dual cannon or ml dual heavy cannon

It applies to the next 10 seconds of fire...all cannons firing during this time will be under the affects of scatter volley

Cheers, and now you know
And knowing is half the battle
Chive on and prosper, eh?

From my personal experience, it fires about a 45 or 90 degree cone, depending on whether it's single cannons/turrets or DHCs and DCs, at up to 3/4/5 targets depending on the rank of CSV. CSV lasts for 10 seconds, which means that you can cast it however many times while the skill is up (usually about 2-3 times). It also tends to prioritize whatever you lock on first before the next targets, so you'll still be hitting your primary target. Note that each CSV volley cycle also stays on the same target rather than switching mid-cast.

BFAW on the other hand, can literally go anywhere regardless of your current target. It fires 5 times at 2 random targets per beam. Targets are completely random even within the beam cycles, and is thus an effective anti-spam measure. It suits cruisers perfectly as they tend to be in the middle of the firefight, and can use BFAW to clear any weak spam around them without screen vision on a particular target.
