I just started my first KDF officer and I thought I'd go with Science since my Fed Captain had been tactical. Blowing stuff up in a gun platform was cool, but it was rarely interesting. I only did PvE/STFs though, I guess it would have been different to play in PvP.

Anyway, so now I rolled a Orion Science captain. What ships would you recommend for KDF science chars? I noticed that the Gorn Science vessels are only availble via the C-Store. I don't necessarily mind that, but if I'm going to spend money on a shiny ship anyway I want to look at all the available options first.

I noticed some carrier ships also have a Commander Science Boff slot and lot's of science console slots. How do they work out? Since there are no carriers on the FED side I have no idea how those play. I read somewhere that they are useless for PvP since people will just nuke the pets away with AoE abilities, is that right? I didn't play PvP as a FED but I might as well start now.

So which ship would you recommend to a science officer and why?

Well historically Klink Sci Captains can do very well in BOPs. I haven't tried the new sub 50 Klink Sci vessels. In fact I think a lot of folks only buy them for the special consoles.

I have flown the Varanus (the lvl 50 klink sci ship). I do like it. It's as good as any Fed Sci ship IMO

What this guy said. Back when the captain class was pretty much stuck in the class ship, the very very nimble BOP flashing its deflector dish in any direction it wanted to was very nice. Still is. If you want inherent subsystem targeting though, you need a Gorn ship or a carrier.

I have em all. Like em all. Like the Gorn ships the most. For science.

My Gorn Sci spends most his days in the Kar'Fi, seconded by the Guramba when he want's to blow s**t up. I can play any role in the Kar'Fi from heal boat to tank.

BoPs & the Vo'quv would be "free" (no c points), echoing everything already said.

If you are cheap, stick to BoPs while leveling up, but seriously consider the Vo'quv at level 40. It's closer to the "true" Science ship than the BoPs, although it turns like a three-legged pig.

Get Kar'Fi. Set her up with fwd DHCs & aft turrets.

Pros :

Decent firepower

Decent science BO skills (which needed for crowd control, energy drain, etc)

and various seletion of pets! (yes, they are rather fragile)

Cons :

Decent firepower isnt that decent compare to bop or raptors
(still, my Kar'Fi firepower exceeds my Intrepid Retrofit)

BoP pets for Vo'quv only

About science consoles :

Phaseshift generator, field generator, and boost your science skill consoles.

Thanks for the replies everyone

I considered just sticking to a BoP, those are what I've been flying in so far and the Battle Cloak is certainly very nice. But it just doesn't feel very science-y you know?

It's true that I can get a Vo'Quv for dilithium, but the leveling was so fast (double exp event didn't help either) to level 40 I only got about 10k worth of dil along the way. I guess I'd rather buy the dil than grinding a month just to get that ship for free.

I think I'll either go with a Varanus or a Karfi once I hiit level 50 (which will probably happen later today...). Leaning more towatds Karfi, I like that menacing spicky design while the Varanus looks a bit like a shoe box. The special console seems much nicer than the phase-shift thingy on the Karfi though.

What kind of power levels do you folks run your ships with? I know Aux is very important for Sci abilities, but it also seems harder to quantify the efficiency gain compared to weapon or shield power. Being used to flying an escort it still feels like I'm gimping myself hard for every point of power I take out of weapons or shields

BoPs aren't for science?! By Kahless' beard! What's not science-y about shooting a Torpedo up their Aft?!!

The Vo'quv is not that hard to build towards. 120K Dilithium isn't that unattainable. With the Contraband guy ALWAYS there in First City, and the steady stream of Contraband via Doffs, it's hard not to cap out in Dilithium conversion as soon as you have the Contraband at the proper level. It's just a matter of patience. Too bad they nerfed the Empire Defense grind... it was nice to build towards those Kill titles like Order of the Bat'leth while grinding Dil.

Plus, I cashed out some of the Dil on my other characters, converted to C, and then reconverted to Dil on my Science character to get the Vo'quv when I got close. With Dil exchange rates being what they are right now, the loss factor is minimal.

Besides, I used my c-points for the B'rel Retrofit. Sure, you drop cloak when you use some Sci abilities, but it's just like firing a Torpedo Spread with the Enhanced cloak. What's not science-y about dropping Grav Wells from Cloak?

Not to upset you, but just create a new offer for selling Dilithium for 500 c-points each then withdraw your offer, and BOOM all that dilithium you wanted to sell for 500c a piece is in a communal bank all your toons can withdraw from. No exchanging needed. No loss needed.

Oh and I like my KDF flagship for my sci officer, I am trying a power drain build, seems fun.
