# 1 Trying an all beam adv.escort
04-11-2012, 11:39 PM
I'm trying out an all beam escort, this isnt to start a debate about DHC vs Beams ect. I'm aware that beams cannot match the raw burst fire power that a DHC can output.. However, I want to try this for two reasons.. one, i can't ever seem to stay lined up with the people i'm fighting, i very rarely get to unleash hell on a person i'm dueling against, unless it's a target that is focusing on someone else, i'm often spending more time trying to turn to keep up with them.

I get it.. I suck.

Secondly, you don't see it very often, atleast not at my level (40), i figure I might as well try it out.

My question is this.. i'm aware that it drains the ever living crap out of my energy.. what items do I need to buy to minimize this effect?

This is a bad idea for a number of reasons. Mainly, that it makes your two largest damage arcs your port and starboard sides. It's a waste of your ability to turn to have that. My suggestion is you temper it; front-load a pair of beams, with single cannons. Back being beams or turrets.

However, pursuant to your original question. I run an Engineering beam boat, and the biggest issue is clawing that power back. EPS transfer rate is your friend. Max the relevant skill, and invest in an EPS flow regulator, as powerful as you can afford and mount.

The fun bit is that you get four shots per cycle with beams, and each ticks from the current power when it fires, not when it was immediately fired. This means that the first shot might not be uber, but each progressive one will get more powerful.

My second piece of advice is to stagger your firing as much as possible. I run eight beams, and try to NEVER have all eight fire off at once. That drops my weapon power from 125 to around 70. With the front and rear batteries firing off opposite each other (one fires when the other is on 2s of cooldown), my power level is much more stable, and hovers around 100.

Good luck, and keep me informed on how it works out!

Interesting idea, but to echo Stargate it really doesn't play do your ship's strengths. One of the things that makes an escort so brutal is Cannon Rapid Fire, and the ability to multiply your damage and shred a target. They aren't build for drawn-out beam slugging matches like a Cruiser (or the heavy shields of a Sci).

One thing you could do is, for now, go 3 turrets in the rear, 3 single cannons in the front, and either a torp or a dual beam battery (with Beam Overload) as your hammer. The single turrets would let you use Rapid Fire, and give you a 180 forward arc, at the cost of 1/6 of your damage (but much more than if you aren't on target at all). Get used to cannons, speed, your buffs, and throttle control, and as you become a better pilot you can switch the single cannons for duals without having to adjust anything else.

And as to your actual question, either way you'll want a top-quality EPS Flow console to help with the drain and recovery, ESPECIALLY if you go for the DBB/Overload setup.

EPS no longer regens weapons.

That's right the Skill and the Console do not boost power recovery anymore.

EPS only helps you transfer power and after coming out of Full Impulse or using Beam Overload.

What? When was this? Unless it was the last patch last night you are very, very wrong.

Thanks guys for the tips, I understand that i'm probably going to have to return to using cannons. this is kind of an experimental thing just trying to see how well i can make it work for right now. Money isn't *really* an issue for me. I work for a living; so I have the disposable income to drop 20 in to the game here and there as I need.

So if I want to play a beam ship, I probably ought to aim for getting the Odyssey Tac Cruiser then?

Any of the odys work well as beam boats. Though they turn like the Titanic. I'd suggest going for a multi-vector. You still retain a ton of turn-rate, and the split will work nice on a beamer.

Or the Excelsior since it turns faster and does have a LtCmdr tac station. Or the D'Kora, if you're feeling lucky and find some gold boxes (I'd never waste the EC on regular boxes; you may as well donate the money to a charity for pacifist Klingons).
