STO does not offer players any way to transfer their winnings back into RL currency.
Gambling, with any other name, is still gambling.

You spend RL cash, on the -chance- to win something. That, in essence is gambling. Plain and simple.

I'm even more disappointed after having a look at the Lobi store. Sure, maybe if you were guaranteed to get 20 or so crystals from a lockbox, those prices would be sane. I opened one box, just on a whim (and to do something with my stipend from last month), and got...TWO CRYSTALS (and nothing else). Yeah, some sane drop rates right there

It's nice to know the lockbox ship comes with everything players have been asking for!

CBS won't release ths ships for outright inclusion, so the C-Store is out, as is any other means of actually purchasing the ship outright.
CBS wants them really rare, Cryptic wants money. Thus lockboxes are born.

Here's a simple way to stop the Cash grab boxes just have everyone stop subscribing and if enough people dont come back then they wont do it anymore. but as long as you keep subscribing or playing its a win for CRYPTIC.

*sigh* this really does make me sad. When I read the dev blog at first I thought yay! This will be a nice ship for my ferengi char, and I'll go level him for this. When I realised it was another lockbox item...

Well looks like i wont be jumping back into STO anytime soon.

Even if they made it so that if you bought one of these 3 lockbox ships in the c-store you couldnt get the other 2 ever thus ensuring rarity then I could cope.

I really want them to release the ambassador this way just to see all the rage that would follow.

Doesn't look like you've read the ESRB Teen rating definition, which clearly states "simulated gambling" is illegal for that rating. That doesn't mean it converts to or from real world currency, it simply states any form of simulated gambling.

That means Dabo, Lockboxes, etc.. all violate the game's Teen ESRB rating. Combine that with the fact that people feel they are being extorted out of their money with the current system, and you know why they are filing ESRB complaints, and calling Attorney General offices. Cryptic/PW crossed a final line here, and it will hurt them for having done so.

The dictionary definition of something is not necessarily the same as the legal definition. As I said, something is not gambling, by the legal definition, unless you have a way to convert your winnings into RL currency. I'm not defending Cryptic, simply informing you of something you are obviously not aware of. And it is for this very reason that there is no legal action that can be taken against Cryptic.

The ESRB is a self regulatory agency with no legal power. Video game companyies have no obligation to submit their games to the ESRB for rating. It is true that some game stores will not sell games without an ESRB rating, however STO is no longer being actively sold in stores aside from left over copies, so Cryptic and PW could completely abandon the ESRB rating on STO if they wanted.

Individuals under the age of 18 (and 21 in some localities) are allowed to use real money to obtain a CHANCE at winning something. Its gambling; I've already done this once with Sony, I'll do it again with Cryptic.

First of all, dont worry; I'm not telling you what you can do. You can report anything you like to whoever you like, but that doesnt actually mean anything will happen. That said, there is no "chance" at winning here: you actually get *something* in every box. It may not be what you wanted, but you still get something. And as previously stated, you have no way to convert your winnings into RL currency. So again, report all you like, but you arent going to see anything happen.
