Well, we all knows that with the Season 6 update we are bound to have a new class of carrier: the Armitage-class. So, starting the next few weeks STO's Starfleet will have 2 distinct class of carrier: the Atrox-class, and the Armitage-class.
Probably, I'm looking at the issue with only a Science guy view...but, since the Caitian vessel has 2 hangar bays vs 1 of the Armitage, the new carrier is really worth her cost in Cryptic Points?
Well, to be honest they're quite different ships altogether. Sure, they both have at least one hangar bay but that's where the similarities end.
Due it being an escort, the Armitage has more need for engine and weapon power, thus reducing the amount of energy that can be spent on recharging the hangar bays. Rather than half the fighters of the Atrox, it can easily have only a fourth of them as a result. It's defenses are also a lot weaker but on the upside it can pack quite a punch by itself, where the Atrox would be ill adivised to run anything with less than a 280 degree arc.
Basically, one's a cruiser where the other's an escort. They're not designed for the same thing and as such it will be tough to determine the 'better' ship, especially when just looking at hangar bays. Although when it comes to pure 'carrierism', the Atrox will win out. But that's like saying a hotdog is a better than a hamburger only because it's longer.
My primary ship is a Luna, and I have a Nebula, Destiny and an Atrox. The latter is definitely different than a science vessel.
Science vessels do a fairly large portion of their damage through science abilities if so set up, and their maneuverability allows them to make good use of DBBs. They also have that sensor scan ability that causes their DPS to increase as they keep a target locked. The Atrox lacks the maneuverability to make good offensive use of damage dealing science abilities since they are either close range, or limited to a forward arc. It also lacks the sensor scan stacking ability, so it is reliant upon fighters to do a fair deal of damage. Despite the integral target subsystem abilities and the large number of science boff slots, I'd put the atrox in it's own class; the playstyle is just too different.
The Heavy Escort carrier, on the other hand, most definitely fits right in the escort class of ships
I quite like the Armitage, problem is, it's an escort. So you fly it as an escort. As a result I very often forget I have fighters. As a result I've taken to using the shield repair drones instead of runabouts or fighters, though they have their place. With the runabouts though the ship can be deadly, you get four of em out there and that's four tractor beams on a target holding it still while you go torpedo crazy. (Something that needs to be fixed in my opinion). The Atrox is a great ship on its own as well, but it's a support craft not an offensive craft, it can tank a bit, and it's got excellent crowd control potential if specd right, but it's not something you'll want if your science character is of the offensive sort.

high yeild ferengi missiles are pretty descent with their larger attack radius, its pretty much perfect for broadsiding Atrox's. it's also helpful when your running a lower weapon power setting for quicker launcahble respawn or better shields, being that its not an energy weapon.
