# 1 Crash from branching texts
04-20-2012, 10:46 AM
Since the latest patch, whenever I try to build a branching choice dialogue tree, it crashes STO.

I have not seen if it happens yet in other missions I'll test that, the crashes take a toll on my system sometimes, but i did enter a description in the cryptic error auto thingy. I need to get the mission ID to when I go in client.

I'll try to confirm this later. Can you give me some steps to reproduce, exactly as it crashes for you?

So far it only happens on the newer mission, I've had no issues so far testing the steps in another.

Basically It's the "default text" choice of any contact, vs popup or "Talk to contact" dialog options.

When I get to about a third tier of 2 choice text options, the moment i slide a popup dialog prompt, it crashes as it sets down under right or left choice branch.

Thanks for the details, but can you please give me a step by step here?

I'll try to test later.

1. Click default text (checked) on an Npc contact

2. Npc has dialog such as "What up?"

3. click advanced tab for branched dialog prompts

4. Add a prompt for pc B0ff to add a dialog for choice A

4. Add a prompt for pc boff to add dialog for choice B

5. Add another prompt to follow A, and another prompt to follow B

Usually when either A or B at this stage is added, it crashes.

K, thanks. And these are just simple popups added to follow other popups?

The tree looks like this:

OK, I think I tested but it did not crash for me. I used a npc on a ground map and the dialog tree looks like this:

I started a new project to test it.

I didn't run into this bug this morning when I created a tree. Shot in the dark, but try doing a force verify and reboot your system. If anything, there could be a simple memory hang.

It happens still, on a certain mission only. I'll try duplicating the map and see if it happens with the duplicated npc next test.

Ok Kirkfat I figured out a step you need to recreate!

On on e of your lower tier contact dialogs, try changing the contact costume. That was where it crashes each time.

The moment i click the portrait to change it to a Boff, Bam, crash.

In other words, the default contact dialog does not seem to want to deviate from it's selected default portrait in the text box.

It was never an issue before this patch, I used to deviate a lot, and I did also notice last patch, come to think back, that portrait bugs were the most common bug present!

it seems like the cousin to the old bug with portraits being off contacts i experienced around the time of Brandon's Risa challenge contest. I had to reassign a lot of Npc portraits to the right dialogs.
