Players can join the Distress Signal global channel in game by right clicking on top of their chat box, selecting the 'Channels' tab, typing in Distress Signal and clicking join.

This channel's topic is ROLEPLAY; for characters, ships and fleet starbases in distress, and also for out of character general gameplay help on the Live server (Holodeck)... Please do not be rude, insult others, spam, troll or go off topic, thank you.

  • How to use this channel:

    • Channel Topic: ROLEPLAY for characters, ships and fleet starbases in distress and general gameplay help, any discussion on this topic is cool, any discussion not on this topic is not cool.

    • Primary Topic: At any time when you feel you require assistance, whether you be apart of Starfleet or the KDF, simply use the channel to send a distress signal in an RP format, for example "This is the [Ship Name], we're in [Insert Situation], requesting assistance in [Insert System/Sector Block]." and then send a team invite to the player who responds to your distress signal so that they can join you in your mission. This is most helpful when playing on the Elite difficulty setting.

    • Auxiliary Topic: Alternatively the channel can be used to provide general help to others, give tips, advice, etc...

    • Recommended Channel Colour: D2 which is a light red, you can change a custom channel's colour via Chat Settings, under the "Tabs" tab.

    • Also Foundry authors are very welcome to create missions specifically for this type of scenario, for this channel, and players are welcome to suggest player authored missions to use via this channel.

    • In the future it will be possible for your fleet starbase to come under attack, in which case you can send out a distress signal. I believe it will also be possible for non-fleet members to be invited to new fleet actions, in which case if required a distress signal can be sent out.

Hi there, I was wondering if there are any proposed structures to these encounters. Should the player do some pre-work? For instance get near a Borg ship in an encounter or even an episode/mission?

It occurs to me to remove one's shield module. You can't maintain a wrecked hull effect as it autoheals but after they supposedly fix you you could put shields back online. Or you could request they bring a minor repair item and pay them for the service as your shields are out.

Does anyone know missions that don't require a shuttle where you can put your damaged ship deep in an asteroid, like you are hiding from further attacks?

Just bouncing ideas here.

Well honestly, good ideas but it's completely up to you how you want to RP, essentially in game you would be simply picking up a random player via the channel, or perhaps a friend if they're in the channel as well (or after you've gotten to know someone), and doing so that said player can team with you.

This channel promotes team play, in an MMO which has been stated to have a larger solo play experience than multilayer experience. The roleplay element allows players to further immerse themselves into the Star Trek universe, but how they do this in game is completely up to the player.

Note that I'm not employed by Cryptic/PWE, I'm just a volunteer here on the forum, and long time player of STO.

There are many mission maps in game which have asteroids and various other debris within, so you could easily RP that you've lost power and are hiding, etc...

Thanks for posting, feel free to discuss it further if you wish!

Alecto, great idea for an RP channel called Distress Signal - however; there is still one thing that bothers me, not about this particular channel in general but about a certain gameplay aspect of this game that has yet to be address or given its due.

I am still waiting for an Global Accolade Channel that purely focuses on achieving certain Accolades.

I would love to play Stranded on ELITE and get the team accolade and the profession one to, same for the Doomsday Mission that requires a full team to obtain the ultimate accolade.

There are several other accolades that would be nice if players help out in obtaining them.

Fun, I'll go take a look later.

This is exactly how I do ship to ship communications with the more serious fleets out there. Ship to ship hails add a lot to immersion seeing background activity on the fleet channel. Also there is some nice canon reference from one of the Trek movies, illustrating how deep space traffic control in ST was accomplished. (The one with the whales)

Sadly, no one does this nowadays.

I've updated the OP to describe a new scenario in which the channel will be used in future post season 6/7, once we have fleet starbases (S6) and fleet starbase PVP (S7).

Thanks for your interest in the channel so far, please help spread the word to your friends and fleet mates.

Some might ask...

Isn't roleplaying about hanging out on Drozana, DS9 on Saturdays, social chat etc?

Not quite. When RP is done using starships it takes on a whole new meaning. You're not going to sit still in the ruins of Wolf 359 gawking in awe at all the wreckage. Neither are you going to sit in spacedock swapping tall tales and how you got 5% more critical damage out of your DHCs.

Far from it.

Starship roleplaying is about being the Star Trek Captain you've always dreamed of being.

Explore strange new worlds, conduct freedom of navigation exercises, use elite episode replays to train up team members and yourself in tactical maneuvers in a controlled environment for an advantage in your next PvP or ESTF run.

For those who haven't tried addressing their friends by ship name, using realistic ship to ship hails, you might want to try saying something like "Ark Royal, this is Illustrious, detach to engage shipyards, I have the Kang" in your next PUG STF. Who knows, you might instantly break the ice for everyone as we did on a marathon ESTF chain after a short Distress Signal roleplay.

Captain's Log, Stardate 89929.14
USS Yukikaze, on patrol in the Gamma Orionis theatre of operations.

Deep space patrol cruiser ILLUSTRIOUS reported new surge in Borg activity in the Gamma Orionis FEBA. En route to intercept a Borg detachment that had penetrated Battlegroup Omega's defence perimeter, YUKIKAZE was scrambled to assist and provide tactical escort as the cruiser continued to probe enemy force dispositions with her superior astrometrics equipment.

Demonstrating standard CEC implementation, YUKIKAZE slaved navigation and weapon control to ILLUSTRIOUS tactical officer as both ships maneuvered through a chaotic and strange surprise melee between Borg and Undine vessels. Upon reporting the taskgroup's findings to BGO Joint Forces Command, an ad hoc strike group was formed around ILLUSTRIOUS.

It's mission is to exploit the temporary distraction caused by Undine skirmishes to penetrate enemy lines and strike at a minor transwarp hub 15LY from the defense line.

With no time to waste, ILLUSTRIOUS and YUKIKAZE set course at maximum warp to the target area while BGO's command and control AI assigned 3 other Starfleet vessels to launch a coordinated assault with them. With the assistance of taskgroup ARCHIMEDES, the transwarp facility was destroyed within 15 minutes with minimal Starfleet casualties.

In gaming terms, the objective of the above matchmaking between otherwise random STO captains was:

1) Enhance STF mission performance by utilizing out of the box training and organization methods (contemporary naval warfare doctrine used as an example)

2) Exploit elite episode replays as a means to evaluate pilots and tactics in a controlled environment

3) Improve PUG communications with leading by example and volunteering to play important team roles (one of the team members brought along for the ride had told me earlier he usually played Normal STFs only due to the sometimes hostile nature of Elite PUGs - well he kicked major butt after increasing his single target DPS by 35%!)
