I wouldn't have tried this game if it wasn't Star Trek. I'm old; really really freeking old. I was there when TOS originally aired and I never missed an episode. And I was there for all the spin-offs although I only watched TNG sporadically (it just didn't hold my interest) and never watched DS9 much because I thought it was more like General Hospital in space than Star Trek. Anyway, STO is a Star Trek themed game; no more no less. With that in mind I can forgive STO's many and frequent departures from Star Trek cannon. I appreciate that the creators of STO really have put a lot of effort into bringing Star Trek to life in an online game and for the most part I think they've done a pretty good job. There are of course some major annoyances that serve as constant reminders that this is indeed just a game. Lock boxes for example. Imagine the crew of the Enterprise hitting a lock box.
Kirk: Wast was that?
Spock: We've struck an object captain.
Kirk: Object? What kind of object?
Spock: It appears to be a Cardassian lock box sir.
Kirk: Can we go around it?
Spock: No sir, we have to choose NEED, GREED or PASS or it will follow us everywhere.
Kirk: What's a Cardassian?
This sort of thing tends to ruin one's immersion into the game and immersion into the game I think is the goal of any good RPG, or at least it should be. There's a little too much Mario Bros. in STO for me to consider it an RPG. But that being said, I enjoy playing STO and just take it for what it is...a Star Trek themed online game.
Personally I'm here for both. I really enjoy the game, and I really enjoy trek, but to be honest, with all of the unpopular decisions being made as well as the suggestions to improve them being ignored I probably would have left if not for it being trek.

I have to admit that even though I am sympathetic to the need for a revenue stream, the sheer volume of boxes is annoying.
If STO were a generic sci-fi game, I would have left after the first month.
I first joined STO because of the promise of a Trek game. I followed it's development from the first day Perpetual announced it, and I admit my hopes were high. So were my expectations. After all, Star Trek was so well defined with over 700 episodes and a dozen movies, how could it fall short?
Unfortunately, the gameplay didn't deliver. STO was rushed and the game was clearly incomplete, but I signed up for a Lifetime sub anyway, believing that Cryptic would come through. I admit STO has made progress forward with features such as the DOFF system, but lockboxes, a half-finished Klingon faction, fish-tank zones, uninspired PVP, and repeditive missions have kept the game from blossoming.
I still have a tiny amount of hope that STO will become Star Trek eventually, but there's still a long way to go.
i'm not a huge star big fan, i was born long after TOS was cancelled. I did however watch reruns on the ION channel of TOS (but not all of them) before i had switched to cable. The only shows i activelly saw was Star Trek: Enterprise, Voyager and TNG. With that being said, im here for both its sci-fi and star trek origins. I don't keep canon uniforms except for the 22nd Century Terran Uniform (proudly bought with dilithium during first contact sale). Ppl tell me i look like Terran Hoshi o.o
