If I show up to an STF (Especially an Elite) with a low Tier ship, for instance, I may as well be saying "Here guys, do this whole STF with one player missing!". I mean, why not take my big Tier 5 ship and just take off its shields and all but 2 weapons in front and 1 in back, only slot 4 consoles, and use hardly any BOFF abilities and see how much help I am to you. The sad thing is that even with that setup my Tier 5 ship will STILL be stronger than the low Tier ship...
I really don't see what you COULD do though. Also, the rainbow barge isn't the same as showing up in a lower tier ship. They are not optimal but the generic item damage bonus isn't so much lower that anyone is killing the run over it. Sacrificing the optional more often than not? Maybe but that's usually a wash in the PUG games anyhow.

I dont know if this was a response to my rainbow fail whale remark. My point was I wont judge a player on how they kit their vessel. If running different colors is your choice, I will not judge. It was sarcasm to the OP.I did a sector call a month ago with a R/A toon. All the ships were multi colored, and we had a sucessful takedown of the unimatrix vessel in short order.I run my endgame defiant with quads, and Im sure other players think I should ditch them for borg heavys.OR why is he running phasers?I want the canon feel, and they get the job done.Thats why.My EC bank is bursting because I usually get nothing I can use from secondary drops, so I sell it.I should have completed my thoughts on my remark.I may run a "purist" vessel, but I am sure other "purist' would judge it inferior to their's.My point is, I would rather run a fleet action, with a group of multi-colored vessels, than one elitist jerk.As for my remark on kids, I had a ten year old relative playing another,"kid-friendly" MMO and spent an hour crying in her room because someone spammed insults to her.Its sooooo easy for the toughguys to do that to a faceless player.Congrats toughguy, now go push an old woman, and kick a puppy.(Sarcasm to the elitists)

Ironically the more different weapons you mount the LESS the borg can resist you (in star trek terms at least)
because they can't adapt to EVERYTHING at once

You could do this by limiting STF's to Tier 4 and 5 ships only. That would prevent anyone from bringing their Tier 1-3 underpowered ships into any public STF's. You can leave it open to private matches as much as you like.

Only if you shot with one and then another in succession changing it up once they adapted. Otherwise, they would likely adapt to all equally fast. Besides, the Borg in STO do not work that way.

actually Borg in STO come mob handed
I always wonder about that

took half of starfleet to stop one cube at 359
so why are they now sending more cubes against half a dozen ships (one of which last time I was in action against them was a shuttle)

First of all its not the 'Rainbow ships' that are the problem, Ive run into a few that worked fine (i havent run one but they never seemed to slow the stf down). What the problem is, is people who just hit 50 going right to Elite level content and not knowing what to do.

Instead of 'banning' people for weapons choice i say people should be forced to run the normal STF's a number of times BEFORE going to elite, just to get an idea of what is required for each one.

Personally I stay on normal anyway because anytime I go to do elite content I get the 'oh, great, a cruiser' (i fly the orion flight deck cruiser). apperently the game has no room for people with any build not revolving around an escort. To be clear I specced to tank so i guess thats mine and Cryptics fault (For the one shot torps).

Small question
Is the Orion flight deck cruiser any good??
(I have an Orion commander on the KDF side and I was thinking of buying him one)
Specifically how does she handle?
