Missing additional character slot for current/ lapsed Gold Members
I'm a level 50 science captain. I have only ever gotten science class ships. I was wondering if it is worth getting an escort class ship for use in some STF missions.

Nah. I've got three lvl 50 captains, one of each specialty. There's a sci ship that has 2 tac BOff slots. You should be pretty good to rule the skies with that one. It'll all depends on the skills you have your officers trained in.
Although it wouldn't hurt to have a fleet escort in your fleet.
Yeah I have that science ship. It's the recon science vessel.
I wasn't thinking of using the escort ship as my primary one, I was just thinking it might be good to have one for the days when I need some major fire power. But I wasn't even sure as a science captain if I could use one well enough to be worth it.
I still think it comes down to how you have your BOffs trained. There are a lot of players who have a captain of a certain specialty, but fly a different type of ship, and do it very successfully. I found that while doing stf's, mirror events, red alerts, etc you get a mix of different captains and ship types. It boils down to personal preference. Commission a free escort and hit some deep space encounters. It does seem that sci ships are at a distinct disadvantage with only 3 fore and aft weapons slots and no dual cannon mounting. But you also get gravity well, tykens rift, and photonic shockwave I always thought sci ships were a good mix of hull and speed. Not too slow, and can take a beating. At the very least, flying one of each type of ship will make you a better player. And evasive maneuvers in an escort is really cool!
It's a nice change of pace from sci ships. You'll do less damage than a tac captain in an escort, but you can still put out some good damage. I picked up an advanced escort on my sci captain for some variety, and I've been very happy with it.
I would echo what others have said - A Sci officer can have a lot of fun running an Escort.
I did the exact same thing with my first SCI alt. The only advice I have is to remind you that combat priorities and capabilities are very different, and it can be frustrating at first - don't let it put you off.
Thanks for the info. My biggest worry was to spend money getting an escort ship and they have it be a complete waste. I know I wont be able to do the same amount of damage as a tact captain with an escort, but it will be nice to have some improved DPS for the days that I need it.
do also look at the c-store MVAM, having all the traditional escort cannon/torp BOFF skills and Gravity Well 1 is very useful on space STFs when you want to hold probes etc and blast the snot out of them
but, to echo most of the above posters....any ship with any captain can be effective in PVE...dont let anyone tell you otherwise, but do make sure you have the right build when doing more advanced events like STFs or PVP
