A bug that involved Romulan Liberated Borg captains and their skills once they chose an ally
So, the STF respawn timer isn't that difficult to work with on ground because your teammates can rez you. However in space, they can not. My Idea...
When your ship blows up, have your captian (you) eject view an escape pod from your ship. That ship will broadcast a distress beacon (with a flashy light). A fellow teammate can then beam your pod into their cargo, thus allowing you to respawn.
Because the one shot one kills are still in the STFs and in space, all you can do is watch.
Thoughts?

BRILLIANT!!!! GENIUS IDEA!!! You sir have my vote, and you have it now!
Your idea has merit, but I think I prefer the idea where space combat duplicates ground combat. Your ship becomes disabled, and then you're able to request help to get repaired, or you can respawn.
This would be great. If you chose to respawn after the timer ran down you could have the computer announce something like "warning, warp core breach in progress" and then your ship explodes allowing you to respawn .
I can't help but think that the STF space death mechanics (or more specifically, Gozer's knowledge of the fact that you have to wait for the timer every time) is meant as a way to nudge players towards ground gameplay.
Seems like the sort of thing Gozer would do. He deliberately removes or breaks the things players like the most, all in the name of his view of how it should be.

Ya but seeing an escape pod with an emergency beacon would be so cool :-) But we need a way to pick players up that die in space.
There would actually be a point to hitting abandon ship.
Here's the thing, as I see it the timer is punishing those who just run in and explode, with some half decent tactics any ship can survive. Those invisible super torpedoes still hurt but they've yet to 1 shot me in my escort now they can't crit. Oh I'm left with about 30% health from full shields and I need to take precautions but I'm surviving them. In an Escort.

or you stay disabled till you get your hull repaired to 50%

Yes I really like that idea, and that also the NPCs should leave you alone once your vessel is severely crippled. Wouldn’t it make strategic sense that once an enemy vessel is almost totally burned out and well on its way to probable warp core breach, to ignore it and move its destructive resources to more able targets? Can’t count the number of times I’ve been chased (engulfed in hull eating plasma smoke and sparkling like a X-mas tree) to death by Captain Ahab Borg cubes while it’s being pummelled by another health vessel(s).
Like the idea of sitting and watching out of commission until hull reaches 50%. Minor components for this. Total extermination... major components.
