oh, PS: I tried playing in rpg mode, but that mode just isnt for me... My gaming heritage comes from first person shooters... (and strategy games... ); so I use Shooter mode instead.
Not perfect? yes... More fun (and more control; which I like... )? Yes..., and somehow the camera doesnt suit me either, when in rpg mode you constantly have to move your camera around with your mouse (and holding down a mouse button... which I find tiresome for my one finger pressing the button..., and shooter mode alleviates this)
RPG or shooter mode? Its just a personal preference.
Oh, and by the way; on the barge of the dead you have to fight a certain named Lord... I actually have more problems with him then I do with Fek'Ihr...
Just load up on hypo's and weapons (well, the 2 you can carry anyway... )
Compression pistols are kewl... the secondary fire has a chance to knockback foes (well, from the uncommon ones upwards...) It is a short range sniper pistol...
This is the first RPG I've played where there was an optional FPS method of control, and I just find myself wondering how it makes any difference when the game's mechanics don't account for actually side-stepping out of the way of the shot (except for grenades and melee). I know that staying on the move increases your dodge rate, but it still comes down to the RNG to determine if you get hit or not by a gun.
If you enjoy using it, more power to you. I'm just curious, myself.
The downside of using shooter mode is the fact you cant actually 'lock-on' a target... In shooter mode as long as your target is even a bit inside the crosshair you can still hit him. But this method isnt advisable in cluttered up fights... you bring an npc down to 5% HP, and then another fresh hp npc walks into your crosshair... This has given me some nasty deaths...
But i like shooter mode because its more fluent gameplay than the rpg mode... I hate it when I have to press 10 buttons and 4 skills just to engage in a fight... I am not talking about the fight itself... I rather just use skills and a single button press to activate shooter mode. Less trouble, about the same fun i pressume. This lets you change targets quite litterally on the fly; just point your crosshair to another target and start shooting; whereas with tab you can actually press once to much and you get a target you dont want...
Both have their ups and downs...
But as I said before its really a personal preference. i prefer shooter mode.
I have setup my ground skills so that my most used ones are in the lower bar, so I can just press a number to activate; the others are in bar 2; to be activated with ctrl + number... And to be honest I cant play in rpg mode... It is just not for me. I think if it wasnt for this gaming mode, I would have let go of ground combat alltogether.
And about the hitting thing... It is kinda silly; especially in space where you evasive away with 10-15% hitpoints just to die 10 kilometers away by some invisible torpedo. That is frustrating; you seem to be safe and yet you still blow up... This has caused me to ragequit sometimes... Honestly. Ctrl-alt delete, open task manager and gameclient.exe 'end task...' Or rightclick in taskbar on the sto icon and select close window...
There are alot of things in sto I dont understand actually... By this I mean some game mechanics; the hitting issue is one of 'em...
Kinda amusing that someone dug this thread out from under a week of dust, but whatever.
When I say RPG I think of 20 years of JRPGs or playing Champions Online where you basically stand there taking turns slugging it out and occasionally healing. Plus with the enemy AI on this game always charging to melee range even if packing sniper rifles, and completely ignoring whatever you do, or the existence if your away team, and most attacks being undodgeable (shooting even through walls), most attempts at tactics fail utterly. And of course your friendly AI is so dumb, aggros everything, and couldn't pathfind its way out of a room with one door, I find the game easier when they aren't around. So stand there, trade hits, occasionally heal. Why I hate ground combat.
As for the strafing thing, well when the clown tries to melee constantly and you're always moving, it just becomes a question of wearing down all that HP. Still, 40k HP? Thats more than my Hegh'ta.
well on elite, you really need to take out the more vulnerable enemys first, and deal with the captains or commanders of a grp after that.
i dont find the ground combat as enjoyable as space combat, but it has some magic moments which require some tactics. (on elite that is)
but the situations where you just die, without knowing what hit you exist too. all in all the ground combat is neither good nore very bad...it's there, thats it.
i enjoy puzzles instead of real combat...it's more star trek anyway. I love talking my way out of difficult situations rather than fighting.
i think that boss in particular was intended to be fought with melee weapon, to make it more epic i guess. But the melee combat doesn't provide that comabt feeling. if there only were a "block" function.
But on normal they made it soooo easy that it really doesnt bother anybody, and those who do it on elite know how to do it anyway.
