If you require an explanation, assume this: There are several "standard" uniforms that are typically assigned based on the specific command. These may be chosen by the CO and may have special variants for specific functions (e.g. senior staff). Exceptions may be made for special requests for specific officers, although discouraged (but you're one of the Heroes Of The Universe here, you do what you want so long as you keep breaking Borg faces in). Your own uniform... well, you're the freakin' captain, who's going to say no? Besides, I hear (but do not know for a fact) that generals sometimes can customize their own uniforms quite extensively. Plus, we're looking at a Federation with over 200 planets with numerous societies on each - who's to say their influence didn't creep into the uniform code?

Starfleet itself isn't what players play in the game...the assault from the Borg have put so much pressure on the Federation that trying to field the numbers of ships and personnel needed to counter the continuous attacks would drain even the massive resources of the Federation to the point they couldn't be sustained. At the same time, Starfleet Command has come under greater and greater pressure from member worlds of the Federation to station protective ships at every member world (the memory of Betazed during the Dominion War has not faded from many politicians' minds).

To solve these problems, Starfleet has reorganized itself. While the main body of Starfleet continues to follow their orders from the Federation Council and protect every major world and station, they have also created the Reserve Fleets, semi-independent squadrons of Starfleet ships under the command of officers technically under Starfleet jurisdiction but free to operate as their commanders deem fit to carry out operations Starfleet is too thinly spread to do. Such ships are actually privately owned by their crews, and more akin to privateers than actual Starfleet ships. Thus, each squadron tends to implement their own uniform regulations and deploy their ships at will.

Thus, yes...there is a standard regulation uniform (those you see on NPCs), but there is no set uniform for player characters because they have the latitude to establish their own regulations aboard their ships and fleets (within the provisions Starfleet imposes upon anyone who wants to be known as Starfleet).

Feel free to accept or deny the above explaination as you wish. As I said, it's only my own rationalization of a Starfleet where captains purchase their own ships, fly them where they will, and set whatever uniforms they want on their ships.
I like this.

It actually fits in pretty well with some theories/explanations I've come up with with the game in general. More specific to THIS, I imagine that Starfleet has wide swaths of ships under broad command jurisdictions. Ergo, while we are all in the part headed by Quinn, there could be others as well. This actually also helps explain why we're all VA's - very different organization under alien psychology, among other things (that said, I continue to wear my captain's pips and have the "Captain" title).

I think we need to see more rationalizations like this, because they can show how creative the fans can be.

One additional thing to keep in mind - during at least some of Starfleet's histories, their emblem - the very badge that unites them - differed from ship to ship, if I recall correctly. The Enterprise emblem ended up the general Starfleet emblem eventually (and I think it was to begin with all the way back when Starfleet was an Earth-only organization).

Also keep in mind that in a lot of situations, I doubt they're going to care all that much about the uniform, as long as they get results. Plus, you're the captain, and it's entirely possible the admirals have better things to do than admonish you for not having regular uniforms or changing your crew's uniforms.

I like the idea suggested in Generations that 24th century Starfleet were now allowing their officers to have a choice of two uniforms to choose from. Its a shame that it didn't seem to continue beyond Generations. I certainly would have liked to have seen the DS9 and Voyager crews chopping and changing between the two uniform variants.

I use the Antares 2 so I look like the rest of the crew that run around my ship and who run around most starbases and its what i use for starfleet people in my founrdy missions..except the admirals

but i find it silly where there are mainly white uniforms or ones that don;t have alot of red or yellow or blue/greenyblue

I guess it is one of those things that most if not all of us have been fans of star trek for many years..why would we then create such a silly non canon uniform?

Agreed

Privateering makes sense, it beckons the historical impacts of Barbary pirates and France and Britain's use of Privateers to bolster a presence on the seas to harass supply lines and intercept trade convoys and to counter the enemy's practices. Also the Federation would be fighting proxy wars against the dozens of enemies at the edges of Fed Space, supplying arms, materiel, and pre-programmed replicators that could produce the staples local militias would need to sustain a prolonged resistance to the Dominion, Borg, etc.

I actually crated my own, which I apply to all of my characters, except for my TOS Captain and my Temporal Ship Captain.

I use the Academy uniform, with a TNG style colorset. Single color for the entire tunic, with the piping at mid chest being black. Then the uniform pants are black. And I use the Alternate Future commbadge.

To me, this uniform, colored in this way, makes for a believable successive uniform to the "All Good Things" era uniform. Additionally, I color any cadets I have on board, to match how they are down at the Academy, so it actually feels like Starfleet when I beam down there for dailys and such.

Additionally, my dress uniform is a variant of this, where the tunic is all white, and the piping is the department color.

For a flag officer, I add the Jupiter Belt to the ensemble, similar to how Flag Officers during the Dominion War used a belt.

Now, granted, this is not canon to the show, since no actual canon exists for this time period, but in this case I created a personal canon, and I abide by it for all characters for this time period.

My character wears the TNG Movie uniform with the TNG movie combadge.
All my boffs wear the same uniform type with the correct colour coding.

Why can't the rest of the crew have the TNG movie uniform and badge?
