There isn't much of a reason to spec for tanking in any of STOs PvE content, debuffs and raw DPS wins hands down.

With the new Elite STF death timers this mode of thinking is out dated. The myth of a five escort super pwnz all team in PvP is just that, a myth. A solid balanced team that can coordinate will always get you farther.

I'm not gonna lie to you, capttadious, I am mediocre at PvP and I prefer to roll tac captain in an escort, but I can make an cruiser that will out tank Morell's best DPS build. From alpha strike to cool down.

Mavario is a much better cruiser teacher than I. So follow this, http://forums.startrekonline.com/sho...d.php?t=249906 thread, and read what the folks there have to say about cruisers.

Loading a zombie heal cruiser up with tetryons and getting close enough to demand the attention of a Borg Cube will buy your DPSers the time to do their job. When you are no longer getting agroed because someone spike damaged to long you can heal up the party while to regen the bosses agro. It's is still very effective.

I would have to agree it is so easy to level and do it quickly. Spec for your VA rank from the beginning. Specially those who don't get respec tokens every rank (silver players). It is very easy to tank in the game but, you give up dps to do so usually. Depends on the build. Thos problem with tanking is you need to spec into threat control. Which sucks if you are running a mission like the new Vault mission. This is where tanking Captains mess up. The object is to remove the agro from the DPS dealer on to the tanking cruiser to allow them to stay alive under their own healing. Keeping them alive allows the team to do more damage. The problem is to many people want to do DPS in cruisers, which can be done. Although they will never deal more than the tac in an escort build properly. If cruiser captain would perform their role the DPS will come in a team event like a STF. It is also desirable to run multiple build under the same spec out. It is good when you are in a cruiser tanking a Tac Cube and holding it agro to allow the rest of the team to stay alive and do their job. A good tanker can even throw heals to other player while tanking nastier enemies.

Your Spec needs to be worked out before you even start playing the character IMO. But when somebody says ship I assume they mean consoles and weapons.

But as for outfitting a Tier 3 ship, unless he mounts nothing but torpedoes it'll probably work. Heck even nothing but photons would probably work.

Off the top of my head you have 3/3 on a T3 Cruiser, all beams or 4 beams and 2 torps.

Why are you rambling on about irrelevant PvP setups, which no one plays, when I replied about PvE? And if you think you need tanking in ESTFs you are sadly mistaken. You need a boatload of DPS to satisfy the optional timers, and debuffs will get you much farther as a team than some suppar DPS / tanky boat. You are no good alive if you aren't contributing.
The respawn timers have nothing to do with that either.

Don't know why I would recommend a PvP build to a PvE player. Perhaps it was as a struggling PvE only player I went tot he PvP forums to up my game. Perhaps it is because I have applied what I learned to all career, ship types, and all possible configurations of those two, (I have 13 active toons right now and have had 22 toons since original beta play opened). Perhaps I want them to be as strong an endgame player, whether they chose PvE or PvP or like me a combination of both as their primary play style, when they get to end game.

Because, as a general rule, a good PvP setup is a more than excellent in PvE. At least that is my experience.

A strong CC PvP build will buy science ship the time the need to wear an AI down in solo play, or root Borg Probes and Spheres in a RA or STF long enough for a team mate to help take them down, at the same time as supporting their team with Hazards and shield heals. All the while dealing more damage than a comparable average PvE only set up.

A strong PvP healer is an excellent tank in solo play, still has an adequate punch, and can easily switch from tank to heal as need be in team play. This makes them the anchor in team play, be it PvP or PvE, If another player dies and respawns it's to the strongest healer they tend to run. Again at the same time as dealing more damage per second than a comparable average PvE only setup

A solid PvP escort, according to my parser, does easily three times the damage in a STF than a pure PvE player, and my escort can spike heal effectively enough that I have been mistaken for a cruiser. Oh and is tough enough to solo two cubes in PvE.

All this from the empirical experience of a mediocre PvPer.

I don't know maybe it's because I want them to be strong players and not hobbled by rainbow bright weapons setups that use RSP on escorts.
