Ha!! I remember that! I didn't realize at first that the only asteroid you had to dodge was the one flying straight at your crosshairs. Every time I had a patrol with asteroids or mines, I'd just eject because I had no idea how to successfully fly through them.

It penalized you for ejecting too much though, you'd get demoted and have to fly the junk scimitar fighter through the whole game, making the later missions almost impossible.

I never played many MS-DOS games, but I do remember the game Descent. You were basically flying around in these underground catacombs. Fun times.

Some of my earliest pc gaming was on a Macintosh.

List of some games I played during the yesteryears:

Sim City
Sim City 2000
Star Trek: 25th Anniversary
Descent (as I mentioned above)
Doom
Quake 2
Duke Nukem 3D
Mechwarrior
Star Trek: Starfleet Command
Star Trek: Starfleet Academy
Star Trek: Armada 1 and 2

I didn't mind Graf Spee but Scharnhorst was my fav
You might want to give the NWS enhanced version of Fighting Steel a try. It's remarkably playable on modern computers and updated with realistic gunnery and historical ship data, is very challenging.

Battle of River Plate looks quite simple - as the German captain you'd think having 11 inch guns would give you range and firepower advantage over the British cruisers but unlike a lot of RTS games... big guns' advantage can be neutered with some smart maneuvering.

As the German player it's also very easy to **** up the map by wasting all the main 11 inch ammo shooting at the wrong target or squandering it on poor firing solutions. You also can't close the range too fast to the enemy as you might end up in the cruisers' optimal 8" gun range and lose your 11" gun advantage. Once ownship is forced to sail evasive it loses most of its accuracy.

Rather than a pocket battleship I find the Japanese heavy cruisers to be far more practical in combat. Lots and lots of 8" turrets. Historically, they were regarded as one of the best in their size class too. On the USN side Indianapolis and her sisters weren't bad too. I was forced to use them as screening ships in a night battle between the USS Indiana and the Yamato once.

After 3 hours of fighting, all my ships were heavily damaged, the Yamato lost all her main gun fire control and withdrew under a smokescreen after I sank the Japanese escorts. None of the USN ships actually sank due to damage control and screening efforts. Yamato was impossible to sink but with limited year 1942 ad hoc forces I managed to force her retirement, which was satisfying. What prevented me from mounting a suicide torpedo run with cruisers is the Yamato's lone aft triple 6" turret which was pretty menacing.
