# 1 What Escort do I buy next?
05-18-2012, 11:25 AM
I have been reading through these forums for days and can't seem to find what I am looking for.

I currently run my Fleet escort most of the time. But I am curious as to what to get into next.

I run primarily Elite STF's, and on occasion a little PVP. But I am looking for more damage than what I am currently putting out. (usually around 4200 dps, single target)

Having a hard time deciding between the Tactical Retrofit & the MVAE. Cant seem to find out if one is better than the other.

Any help or links to something I might have missed would be great.

Thanks in advance.

I don't do PvP, but from STF play the two ships are fairly balanced. I've flown them both.
Tactical Retrofit gives you a tactical ensign slot. MVAE gives you a science ensign slot. Opinions vary on which would be more effective. It depends on your play style and build. The retrofit gives you cloak, the MVAE gives you MVAM. Neither of which is particularly helpful in elite STFs. I prefer the Tactical Retrofit. It seems to handle a little better and I like the look better.
If you're getting 4200 DPS regularly I'm not sure you can do much more. You might be able to tweak your weapons config to get higher spike damage, but that's about it.

The fleet escort is an amazing damage dealer, imo. I don't feel the MVAE (which I have also on my captains) out-damages it, but the latter can bring a few more toys. I also enjoy splitting the MVAE for more speed and the added giggles of seeing two pets wander around killing things with weapons I don't actually have equipped. But that's all tangential -- I doubt you'll get significant DPS increases from either. So then it becomes more of what you think is appealing or which ship design you like better, perhaps.

They both have cool gadgets in the cloaking and multi-vector-mode, but same weapons loadout, hull, shields, number of consoles, and number of BOFF slots (though different layouts obviously). Buy them if you really want to drop a grav well with an escort, or kick butt in a cloaked Defiant, but its a question of personal tastes; they aren't a full tier better and aren't going to change your world.

i used all 4 escorts for PVP and PVE elite stf's. most fun for PVE are the fleet escort and the multivector, although i switched the MV console into the advanced escort version (Ltcmdr tactical)
the 3rd sci boff slot leaves room for some additional sci powers that can be very handy.

The great advantage of the tactical refit is the cloak, but mostly for PVP. But the Boff layout has too many tactical slots.

fleet escort, with the engi ensign slot is great for a free ship, but i don't like the design very much and the additional ensign slot does not have many alternatives to fill. (EPtS, W, E, AUX...engi team is a waste since there should be 2 tac teams anyway)

My advice: If you have a tactical captain and maybe leaning towards doing PVP (new stuff coming up), get the tactical refit. Any other career should get the Multivector.

But it really is a PERSONAL PREFFERENCE!

i have flown both MVAE and the Tac Escort Retro and i tend to favor the Retro due to its higher turn rate compared to the MVAE. Also cloak can be useful if your staking out a gate and don't want it attacking you if ya drew agro from it. also decloaking gives a brief damage boost so its useful in alphaing alot of cannon fodder to bits real quick.

I own both and while I just bought the Refit recently. I'm liking my MV for STFs more due to having that science slot. Having a GW is especially helpful for gate protection. A guy is having trouble he asks for help you go over drop a gravity well do a cannon scatter salvo then go back to what your doing.

So far I like my MV better currently but I'm still learning how to use this refit properly.

The MVAE will lose DPS compared to the Advanced & Fleet Escorts as well as the Defiant R, but it gains Sci powers.

Buying the MVAE and using the console in the AE would give you the same DPS IMO and the gimmick.

I own the MVAE, using a Grav Well and Polarons has helped keep the Borg from healing a Transformer in Infected and saved the Optional. And despite the long cooldown (10 minutes after reforming on the section and 5 minutes for the other two) it's still a fun ship to fly.

I can't confirm this, but I do believe the Defiant R with it's 8 Tac BOFF stations can put out more DPS than the other 2 Escorts. The catch is you need a DBB or Torp on the front for this to work.

You would get higher spike damage, on occasion, but you're overall DPS would be the same. Worst case, a little lower. Depending on your weapons config a tier 1 power in the ensign slot won't make up for the loss in DPS from giving up a cannon (or even torp) for a DBB. I honestly don't use the third ensign slot since I've already got two copies of tactical team 1, cannon scatter volley 2 & 3, and torpedo spread 2&3.

I've actually thought of the opposite of the OP. I've thought of getting out of my tac retrofit and into a fleet escort to see if I could use the engineering ensign slot.
