Both the MVAM and Tac Retro are good ships for PvP and PvE, but honestly there's not going to be a whole lot of DPS variance between the Fleet, MVAM, and Tac Retro--your DPS output will be more about your overall build.

If you do PvP and plan to continue to PvP--especially given the upcoming revamp--it is a difficult choice. The MVAM has its benefits, but so does the Tac Retro. I have both, as well as the Fleet; and I've flown them all. With the MVAM, the biggest advantage you get are the console (though the advantages here are somewhat diminished in practice due to long independent cooldowns, poor AI with no control or customization, and the loss of a potentially valuable console slot) and the possibility of a Lt. Comm. Science BOff on an Escort. With the Tac Retro, you get an out of battle Cloak as well as the best turning of any Fed ship that is not a shuttle.

So in the end, it will really come down to your build, and how you intend to play. Both are viable and strong options.

I honestly don't use the third ensign slot since I've already got two copies of tactical team 1, cannon scatter volley 2 & 3, and torpedo spread 2&3.

I've actually thought of the opposite of the OP. I've thought of getting out of my tac retrofit and into a fleet escort to see if I could use the engineering ensign slot.
Fleet Escort can run 2 copies of EPTS1, so it has way better shielding than the others. I don't know if 2 TSS1 have the same effect.

Still couldn't decide, got em both. Playing with the MVAE now. But that many volley's as suggested by a few others really seems pointless.

you mean cannon scatter volley? works great in KASE for probes and bops in CSE. For PvP I would go with Cannon Rapid fire and High yield instead.

DBB with beam overlaod is signifficantly higher spike dmg, and combined with target subsystems 1 you got yourself a nice PVP built. But yeah for stf's overall dps is higher with 3 dual heavy cannons and a torp launcher. Thats why i consider the tactical escort retrofit the better PVP vessel for tactical captains. Has cloak and packs most punsh, by that i mean spike dmg.

I'd say just have two sets of BOFFs, one pair AOE, one Pair Direct Fire. If you set them up right you can take which ever pair suits the mission and use one of each when your not sure.

I run single-target in PvE and PvP. Let the boats handle the AoE, Escorts are about melting face, IMO.

That would be ideal if you've got the BOFF slots. I don't PvP, so my setup is for AoE.

You can shred with AoE attacks. If you are using Torpedo Spread on a single target it will still fire. There's only one torpedo (I don't remember which) that will not fire a spread at a single target. As far as I know CSV always works. Although, as has been mentioned above, if you are PvPing single target spike would be better.

MVAE is a great little ship, very versatile. Its sci slot makes it very useful in STFs, especially in crowd control and protecting the Kang/gate/portal. It works well in PVP, too, in a couple of different roles (including the very challenging beamscort).

However, nothing beats the facemelting potential of a Defiant. The cloak comes in very handy, especially if you get two of them on the same team. You can use BoP-like wolfpack tactics to rack up lots of kills very quickly. Cloak, spend a few seconds finding the squishiest of targets (preferably with support from a friendly cruiser wearing down a shield facing), position yourself at the weakest facing, then uncloak and alpha strike. Once they pop, use Evasive to get out of the combat zone, rinse and repeat.

The MVAE is probably the most entertaining monster in the game. I actually ran all turrets on mine in elite STFs and I can't begin to tell you how many people I surprised the living hell out of managing to seriously kick some butt with the most under powered weapons in the game. Really that just goes to show the amount of versatility the ship has, and since I originally bought it the AI system for MVAM has been greatly redone.

The one time I was running an Elite STF and the server lagged on me hardcore for a few seconds, when it fixed I was down to no shields and only 20 something percent hull left. I hit a hull regen buff and the alpha sep., and managed to kill the borg that was kicking my butt.
