# 1 Capt Raptor or Capt BoP?
05-25-2012, 05:30 PM
I'm not asking the question because I don't know what these ships can do. I'm asking just because I'm not sure what my mood is for my Ferasan that just hit Captain.

Hmmm ... Suggestions anyone?

BOP. Takes alot more finesse, not to mention being able to configure it to different styles of play.

The BoP is nice if you are adept at quickly swapping Boff configurations after a cd dump and recloak.

The BoP is massively versatile. Make all of your crew a commander and then swap them in and out of that slot as your needs be.

On the other hand, assuming you're tactical, the Raptor will help you deliver quick deaths.

BOPs are made of glass, Raptors have a bit more survivability and more weapons slots. i flew the Raptor the whole time.

Here's the beauty of the BOP though: You can build it to fly in vastly different ways, all with the same ship. A cruiser, escort, and sci vessel are essentially stuck in their specialized roles, which they usually do well. But with a BOP, if you want to switch from a tac heavy build to a sci support role, it can be done with some movearounds. Lots of tac + eng and no sci? Possible. Tac + Sci and almost no eng? Possible. It just depends on your imagination. No need to get a brand new ship

But as was mentioned before, the versatility has a price in a more fragile hull than even an escort, and less total boff slots. But any captain can easily find a home with a bop. It just needs a more "finesse" touch than the more brutish cruisers and escorts.

Not for the faint of heart though :p

and the irony of Raptor meaning "Bird of Prey" compounds the situation.

I would ask then what did you pilot for your Commander Tier? Did you stick with the starter Norgh "Bird" or did you grab the Qorgh "raptor" with your token?

For the mood/feel of your captain what class is it?
An agressive Tactical that hits and runs? Use a Bird
A tactical that waits until the time is correct then attacks and sticks arround till the fight is over? Raptor
A science officer that adapts quickly, strikes without warning then disappears? Use a bird
An engineer that plays agenst the grain makeing a normaly glass cannon ship a little toughter? Bird
An engineer that Strikes hard, is able to take a bunch of punishment, and come out on top? Raptor

Personaly I suck at effectivly piloting the Birds of Prey Raiders. I found myself enjoying the Raptors more until I found the joys of Science on a Carrier and Engineer on a Flight-Deck Cruisers. Suddeenly have an image of a Feasian/Catian monatoring the console trying to catch the red, green, yellow dots representing carrier pets on the screen.

The Birds of Prey are very versitile but generaly glass cannons. I would have trubble surriveing my own attack runs after letting my buddies Cruiser aggro speced boat grab the aggro. The Battle Cloak is ok but if I needed to use it to break aggro and surrive chances were I would be dead as soon as the shields droped. I have not tried the B'rel refit but a buddy that has it and is a better pilot in birds of prey than I am finds it a bit to squishy.

Raptor I found more surriveable in the fight but it being more specialised I never had enough Sci or Engineering for self heals and helping out the Cruiser tank. Eventually I upgraded to a Garamba and my only regrets so far have been spending the money setting it up for Anti-proton before I foundout the Javalin gets a boost from disruptor coils, and the other will be if the Qin +1 ends up being better rather then a side grade option.

Right now I put 'em in a raptor ... and yes, I have already made comments to other friends on the irony of a cat flying either of these two ships.

Oh ... And with Deyvid's help some time back, I already knew the Klingon spelling to create "HaQ Doq'tlhuQ" ... Red-Tailed Hawk ... which is the name of this bird.

BTW ... If a bird is piloted by a cat does that make the cat a catbird or the brid a catbird ... I do know the captain's chair would be the catbird's seat.

Now considering General ranks and whether I'll stick with a raptor up at those ranks or go BoP.

BoP up there looks so much better than the raptor when it comes to the skin of the ship ... but I have always loved the firepower of a raptor.

I also wished they'd fix the pivot point of the raptor up there as well.

At the commander ranks, I went cruiser but have way too many cruiser characters at end-game ... so wanted the change to hit at the Captain ranks.

Started BoP ... went raptor and finally went back to BoP.

Raptor is a great ship ... but at T-5 ... she isn't sexy any more whereas the BoP is.

Toss in that with this character being a sci-cat ... I figure I can keep a couple of extra Bridge Officers in the pool to shake things up on occasion.
