# 1 Create Your Own Trek Series
05-16-2012, 04:11 PM
Now more than ever television is all about the bottom line. A network executive is looking for whatever requires the least amount of money to invest in, as opposed to whatever is the most creative. The biggest casualty of this type of thinking is the sci-fi genre, specifically the one's set in space. Because of this I am skeptical to the idea of ever seeing another Trek series on the air again.

Let's put all this aside for a moment and have an exercise in our own creativity. Imagine a network head comes to you and wants you to design the next Trek series. Where will it be set? What time period? Who will the main characters or actors be? Most importantly what would your overall storyline be about?

I don't think the story even has to be told from the human or Federation point of view. Maybe a series where the main characters are the Klingons or have it entirely set in the mirror universe. The more off the beaten path the more interesting I think. Everything is on the table!

I've always thought that one of Star Trek's great qualities is how it spurs the imagination. I mean, who hasn't wrote a fanfic/series or at least thought up stories?

Here's my idea:

The setting is in the Alpha/Beta Quadrants from 2387 onward. Basically, it depicts happenings in the region following the destruction of Romulus. The Romulans are having tons of problems, both political (they lost their capital world, after all) and not (Klingons are invading?). Tons of other powers, both known and unknown, are taking advantage of the chaos, and the Federation tries to stay afloat during all of this.

The show should be set on the USS Resolute (preferably an escort, perhaps an Akira- or Norway-class) that's travelling the region doing missions for Starfleet, and which keeps getting dragged into conflicts between opposing factions. It wouldn't do a lot of exploring, but it would frequently encounter previously unknown races that are beseiging the region.

Characters: must have a non-human captain. Gender doesn't matter to me. I would like to see an exotic-looking alien in the senior staff; perhaps a Bolian, Andorian, or Cardassian. Someone whose race has their own agenda, and who must choose between helping his/her people or the Federation (like Worf).

What do you think?

I ignored the awful destruction of the Romulus for my stories. We have similar thoughts PsycoticVulcan: escorts and Cardassians.

I have quite a few ideas of my own actually. Currently this one is my favorite.

The series would take place a decade or more after the events of Deep Space Nine. It would be entirely set in the gamma quadrant and exclusively focus on the Dominion. Here's the pitch.

Odo has returned to the Founders. He has brought with him a higher understand and respect for the solids. As a result the Dominion begins to rule with a softer hand. This coincidences with the downfall of the Vorta and Jem'Hadar. The genetic duplication techniques used to create countless Vorta are beginning to become corrupt and their race faces extinction. The Jem'Hadar begin to develop natural immunity to the ketracel white compound and suffer from drug withdrawal.

The Founders eventually release the Vorta of from their service because of their inevitable demise. Some try to carve out new lives among the stars, while most wait nearby hoping that their "Gods" will someday call upon them again. Any Jem'Hadar suffering from withdrawal are being relocated to an uninhabited planet. The hope is that they can overcome their addiction and build a new society by themselves.

All of this has created a sense of fear among the Founders. They are loosing their means of control. This results in a split among them. Some feel that new races must be developed to replace the Vorta and Jem'Hadar. While Odo leads a group that believes the answer is to develop a new cultural model based on the Federation blueprint.

Eventually it is reveled that a small group of Founders have developed new species to replace the Vorta and Jem'Hadar and they have already built the first wave of a new Dominion force. Odo is horrified when he discovers that the surviving Vorta are willingly participating in their own genocide at the request of a Founder. It is to late for them, he realizes the next target will be the surviving Jem'Hadar. Odo and a few other changelings leave the link in an effort to save the surviving Jem'Hadar, while the majority of changelings side with the extremest Founders. The result is civil war among the Dominion.

The series would follow Odo and his group of renegade Jem'Hadar and Dominion aliens as they try and rally people to their cause and free the people of the gamma quadrant from the Founders. Can the Jem'Hadar become there own self sustaining race? Will the Federation become involved? Will rival groups seize the opportunity to attack a weakened Dominion, like the Romulans, Klingons, or a new sect?

That's my basic idea. I haven't worked out all the characters yet. I know it's not in touch with Gene's peaceful view of the Trek universe, but I prefer a more adult approach to the whole series. :p

I like it, it's very similar to the type of series I would like to see. I do hate what JJ has done to the Romulans, but at this point I guess we have to embrace it and it does create allot of interesting story lines to consider.

Starfleet Academy

Follows the PROFESSORS (allows for many seasonal temporary stars as pupils) as they train up the new recruits for the stars. I'd set it about five or six years before the Breen Invasion (gives a very good 'but look what we can do in one more season!' excuse).

My idea:

Set 20 or so years after nemesis,

A new enterprise, oddyssey class, with the Aquarius escort.

Bigger ship with bigger crew, possibly two crews. The main crew and the Aquarius crew. or just have one crew and when it's required the commander can take charge of the Aquarius (comparative to the defiant but newer and more advanced) and go on mini action packed missions while the capt deals with first contact missions and diplomacy.

This gives the good points of both next gen and ds9, with the exploration element from voyager.

First season the enterprise helps unify the galaxy, and take out the Borg once and for all

Second seasons focuses on exploring other galaxies. With new threats.

Action, diplomacy, exploration.

My proposal is this

A Star Trek series set in the close to the dawn of the 26th century.

The Klingon Empire has joined the Federation after another war and cold war that ended with the crash of the Klingon Economy and its military elements stage a coup. (after the destruction of Romulus and a small war with the Romulans, and then the Federation which lasted 20 years)

The Romulan Empire after the destruction of Romulus and Remus nearly disintegrated with so many worlds breaking away, the Remans declaring their independence, and political upheaval caused a long bloody civil war that ended with the unification movement gaining support it needed. The Romulans are now still a zone protected by the Federation given aid and time to heal and have begun the process of joining the Federation.

The Borg- The have been silent and licking their wounds since Voyager delivered
a heavy blow to the Collective. But you never know with the Borg they are not defeated.

The Dominion since the dominion war have stayed in the Gamma Quadrant and are welcoming few incursions of Exploration by the Federation. This tenuous peace is maintained.

Cardassia is well on its way to thriving and becoming a galactic power it was before the Dominion War.

Transwarp is now common place in all Federation vessels and a transwarp network is in place with almost all regions of the Alpha and Beta Quadrants. Slip Stream drives are gaining ground in technology.

The Federation after its war with the Klingons has recovered its losses and have started their main mission of exploration with the christening of a new enterprise... To boldly go where no man has gone before..

I've been pondering my on fanfic series for some time.

Star Trek: Odyssey* follows the adventures of the Intrepid-class USS Odyssey and its crew, in a timeline where the destruction of Romulus was adverted, but the fragile peace between the three major powers (Federation, Klingons and Romulans) are threatened by insidious elements at every turn.

Features / gimmicks include:
  • Mainly peaceful exploration of the unknown

  • Selected events from the STO universe (Devidians, Undine, Remans, Iconians, the 2800) would still occur

  • Cameo roles by characters from existing ST series (e.g. Admiral Janeway as the leader of a task force sent to reexplore the Delta Quadrant)

  • Entertaining the possibility that Klingons may join the Federation by the 26th Century, a massive social change from "proud warrior race" to more emphasis on "honor" would be required. This is a gradual process, and could involve a Klingon civil war (moderate Chancellor Martok vs. J'mpok's desire to "free" the Empire from being a "Federation puppet") and even a Klingon version of the Vulcan Reformation

  • Romulans are still a cunning backstabbing bunch - but with individuals like Praetor Donatra and Senator Nero who vouch for peace (more to do with self-vested interests), a number of interesting scenarios may play out

  • The Borg would have suffered from Villan Decay, and thus not be featured as prominently as in the past

  • Cardassian, Bajoran and Andorian senior bridge officers

  • Havraha's Ensign Helna as a recurring character

  • Nero's supposedly unborn child (ST Countdown comics) as a Security Lieutenant aboard the Odyssey

  • Carefully-applied humor reminiscent of TOS and Stargate

The challenge for me would be to not turn Odyssey into a Sue-niverse piece.

*Apparently, there are quite a few fan series by that name. Derp.
