As I said earlier, that's why I had fun actually coming up with a way for a group of Jem'hadar attack ships to utterly disable the ship within moments.

Or imagining it against a borg tac fusion cube.

Why have twenty ships that explode when you so much as shine a light on them try to deliver a payload of twenty photon torpedoes and twenty mid-range phasers, when you can put a few high-power phaser strips and a quantum torpedo launcher in half the space it takes to launch those twenty ships.
Well, for one thing fighters can be good at swarming an enemy - even five fighters working together could bring down a large starship as long as they had good pilots.

Well, one of the maxims of war is that there is a use for any weapon, it just takes the right commander to find it. Fighters would have uses in Star Trek, but only those an armed shuttle would have...namely, ground support, recon, and close-in attack. As was shown in one episode of STTNG, launching fighters against a starship that can see them coming and has nothing else to worry about is a futile effort, as the starship has enough spare firepower to sweep them all aside without even slowing down (as the Enterprise demonstrated while the crew were under alien control).

Against such a target, you need another ship able to occupy the starship while the fighters move into their range, or have the ability to hide them until they are in effective range. At that point, the massed firepower of the fighters will actually exceed that of a starship, and can result in crippling damage before the target is aware of what's happened. The downside is that, should the attack fail to cripple the ship, or the fighters are seen before they can fire, the fighters will be doomed. For this reason, I think it's more than likely that a large part of the fighter designs seen in STO are stealth and ECM equipment to throw off enemy targeting systems, which is why they require a carrier to haul them around....all that gear means a warp drive that is probably extremely short-ranged and/or short duration. Unlike a standard shuttlecraft or runabout, a fighter would probably only be able to maintain warp speed for a few minutes.

Anyway, that's my take on it.

Could the ship be renamed to The Invisible-class Carrier-Heavy Battleship? That way I don't have to look at it; it's uglier than a pus-filled genital wart.

At 0942 local Stardate, the U.S.S. Invincible, the first in a new class of hybrid superbattleship carriers, left its orbital dockyard gantries to conduct a proving flight across the star system. At 1005 local Stardate, the ship suffered a series of cascade failures in its systems that resulted in catastrophic loss of hull integrity.

"For the Federation News Network, this is Blix'xir Norgal. Back to you, Steve!"
Lies! Lies! It is all lies. Blix'xir Norgal is a pawn of the powers that be. They don't want you to know the truth.

The truth is that plans for the Invincible were leaked in an effort to lay a trap. The gambit worked in that the leads gained by doing this did lead to the discovery of the enemy base, but unfortunately, a here-to-fore unknown vulnerability was found, allowing a small, one-manned fighter to launch a torpedo down an exhaust port, destroying the reactor, and creating an explosion that vaporized the Invincible. All hands were lost save a single high-level official who was valiantly fighting the enemy himself in a fighter. He was saved only because he lost temporary control of his fighter due to a collision, sending him safely outside the blast area.

This led Starfleet's Corp of Engineers to two inescapable conclusions. First, don't invest everything in one really big ship. If it can be built, it can always be destroyed. Second, when laying a trap by leaking plans to important military equipment, don't give them the real plans.
