"1k years before...."

So in a 1k years, they're still living in what amounts to a medieval time period with swords and spells and whatnot.

Why does that trouble me?

You know that's a great point. lol But it always seems like DEV teams want to place events 1000 or so years before the regular storylines. Look at SWTOR, now that's a great example of what your talking about. One would think the tech level would have gone far far high over their 1000 years, vs what you see in that game to what we get in the movies. lol

But hey they want to keep it close to what we like I guess.

When there is magic available, there is less need for technological progress (and tech doesn't always work properly in magic based settings anyway... ).

I;ve always been iffy with that statement. All of tech starts with just the basic simple machines:

Sorry but I can;t see them not working just because magic is around. The "tech doesn't always works" statement is just a plot device made up by fantasy authors to give their works some justification.

People were running around with swords for a lot longer than a thousand years on Earth. What would be troubling is if fashion and architectural style hasn't changed in all that time. Well... unless fashion works on thousand year cycles there. :p
