Why is it always a slap to the face? Why can it not be a punch to the funny bone? Or a kick to the shin? Or a headbutt to the knee? Or a body slam to the thumb?

Head butt to the knee is so...not a good idea.
The Bird of Prey is situational, and probably not a good idea to bother with in PVP.
The HoH'SuS (The BoP in question) is weak... The main reason is the stupid thing uses Transphasic Torpedoes which we are all aware are WORTHLESS. However... It can be useful for preventing a player from totally escaping combat. That is its only real use for the Bortasqu' unless there are carriers around and you want to super spam.
I believe the Cannon he is talking about is the main Auto Cannon console. However, while it is not easy to use in PvP, I have done it with GREAT success. To the OP: Cloak is your friend for using that cannon. Also get others to pin down the enemy for you and blow them to dust.
"Slap in the face" has got to be the most overused overreaction I've seen on these forums. After two years of hearing everything from being logged out after 15 minutes of idle time, to not being allowed to stop ranking up after Captian getting called a slap in the face I just tend to tone out and point someone may be trying to make after typing those four words.

Quantums, Plasmas, Chronitons, even Photons would all have been a better choice than Transphasic. But isn't there a rumour that the Transphasics will get a boost to 40%?

I have not heard this rumor and even if they penetrated 100% they would still suck compared to the other Torps lol. They deal PATHETIC damage and do so very infrequently.
The Saucers and Vectors are totally different things. Yes, they spawn pets which are... mildly useful... (I have killed a number of folks due to the surprise Tractor Beam from the Odyssey Saucer LOL) but what makes these features worthwhile is that they make your ship more deadly and more maneuverable. They are extremely beneficial abilities to have unlike the weak fighter pets.
The Aquarius is nice Vs. Spam due to its Point Defense Turret.
