Simple question - just how effective are inertial dampeners at letting one avoid tractor beams? I'm getting kind of tired of being a sitting duck for the Borg mothership's instakill torpedoes in Red Alerts, even if I've gotten better at avoiding them in general. It's bad enough in a cruiser, so I can imagine how much worse it'll be if I start taking an escort to fight these things.

Thanks for any insight you can give me.

The destructible Plasma Energy Bolts, or the massive plasma torpedo spread? The former can be exploited to deal crippling damage to the mothership - just go close enough for the AOE to affect the mothership, definitely worth sacrificing your life for.

As far as I can tell against tractor beams you can turn a bit, but you can't actually move. So it's mostly useless.

If you would be so kind to enlighten me - if it helps you turn, but not to move, what precisely does it do for you in PvP? Are the tractor beams less effective than those of the Borg mothership? Or is there something else involved?

I avoid this for a couple reasons.

1. Exploding destroys immersion for me. It just does, so I try to keep from exploding as much as possible. One can only be obliterated and converted into data in V'ger's databanks and/or explode into a thousand pieces in front of your eyes so many times before telling yourself "you short-warped away" gets to be a little hard to sell to yourself.

2. However, directly applicable to game play itself, I've actually tried the 'clog the ship' technique, and I can't seem to get the hang of it. So I'd rather not rely on it unless I should be able to manage to figure out how to pull it off. This actually makes me think it might not be a bad idea to hunt down some RA's to try to practice this in.

In my experience if its a single TB, it hardly slows me down (granted in a BortasQu, not moving moving fast anyways). The amount of skill points in Graviton (of the user) may be a factor as well.
Stuns do not seem to last as long
Knockback/ being pushed does not seem as bad (though this may be a deteriment in reality due to crit-chaining)
Even teh Graviton Pulse Generator does not seem to last as long ( though Aux levels on use may be a factor in that as well)

Of course since I fly a Bortie that moves so slow to begin with, this may all be my imagination.

1. Meh, I stopped bothering with that from death 1, meaning I never bothered with it. (Q intervention reverses the damage? )

2. Large ships may experience difficulty in getting the bolt to detonate in sufficient proximity on the mothership. However a good maneuver could easily make the bolt detonate ROUGHLY between you and the mothership - with a small offset on the Y axis, either up or down depending on whether you dived and then went up, or went up and then dived. Either way you should end up roughly at the same place (Y axis, possibly also X depending on maneuver) but on the opposite side on the ship's Z axis.

To do a small demonstration of your positions on each axis (X is horizontal, Z is... don't know how to define it, Y is vertical):

X: Stand by, still trying to sort a graphical demonstration out in my head.

Ok, think I got it:

______S1

___BBBBBBBBB
_______E
______S2

Y: S2 B S1
_____E

Z: Actually identical to Y diagram, I guess.

With S1 being your original position, B being the mothership, and E being the detonation (E for Explosion) of the plasma bolt, and S2 being your expected location.

Edit: Bah, forums blew my design up, gonna have to place some _ signs in some of the lines, especially the X diagram.
