Hi all, I guess it was time that I use these forums to seek help at last.

I recently bought the "Intrepid retrofit" and yes, I knew it's neither a DPS heavy escort nor an unkillable tank. To be honest, I wasn't even sure I could enter an elite STF with it.

Well, I can, but sadly (although not unexpectedly), I end up being the least useful player there. And that's why I ask you, wise forum goers (and hopefully also experienced players), what role should I actually fill in STFs, and possibly other coming space based missions?

I will note that I'm an engineer with mostly universally trained skills that I can't afford to retrain for any new build. Not helpful, heh?

So far I found several possibilities, but...
  1. Crowd control: Yes, many available powers (GW, Tractor beam, TB Repulsor), but what good are they, when I'm still unable to defeat the targets (2 tac consoles, only a Lt Tac boff slot). It's so been next to impossible to defend the Kang in CSE, there's the speed and abilities, but not the DPS. I can take probes (on one side) in KASE, but that can do any ship, without the need for sci powers.
  2. Power/shield drain: This seems to be the thing I'm the best at, right now. Many abilities, subsystem targeting. It works marvelously against Tac Cubes, Ass. Carriers, Donatra... The downside: Half the "enemies" in STFs are unshielded and unaffected by power drain (not sure if generators and the like even have any "power"). Also, draining small targets like probes is usually not worthwhile.
  3. Healboat: Haven't really tried that, but it could work, at least in shield healing and using HE for hull. But it misses eng boff slots that could help (extend shield, AtSIF, ET). Also, not sure it would really help in STFs, since I wouldn't be able to do much more than that healing. Lastly, my Odyssey works great as a healboat while still dishing out respectable damage and being able to tank.
  4. Torp boat: This I might eventually try, the problem is it will hardly work since it necessitates some very specific skillset in order to perform.

So, anything I missed? Or do I have to put up with following the group, doing the least damage, draining the occasional large targets and healing others in a "limited" manner?

And if the latter, what can I possibly use in place of Gravity Wells?

Oh well, thanks and my respect to anyone who actually reads this through.
TOIVA, Toi Vaxx, Toia Vix, T'vritha, To Vrax: Bring in the Allegiance class
Toi'Va, Ti'vath, Toivia, Tia Vex, Toi'Virth: Add Tier 6 KDF Carrier and Raider.
Tae'Va, T'Vaya, To'Var, T'Vira, To'Vrak: Give us Asylums for Romulans

Don't make ARC mandatory! Keep it optional only!

sounds like you should have bought an atrox tbh: seems like it would fit your style better.

C+C (command and control)
Direct the others
Watch our backs and warn us if we risk failing a mission/optional

Countermeasures
Bring down enemy shields and use tractor repulsors etc to keep the area free of mines , fighters and other self mobile grief

you can do either very very well

don't get dragged into tanking

Crowd Control is really an awesome ability that is really useful in STF's, been able to debuff targets so the rest of your team can really crank out the damage is also part of the package too. A Science ship is not there to pull big damage numbers, its there to increase the numbers of the team overall and provide more control in the battlefield. (The Healing can be nice too!)

I'll admit I retired my science ship a while back and went escorts, not looked back since :-P

Not sure why you mention Tanking Solvax, thats best suited to cruisers.

Give it a rest already. If you'd bothered to actually read you will see that he's an Engineer. In a Science ship. So let's either hear you keep whining about "not fulfilling your role" or shut up.

To the OP, don't listen to him. The Ablative console will be able to turn you into an indestructible tanking platform for a few seconds while you spam your heals and Sci BOff powers like Tykens. Done properly you can actually be very useful in STFs, but you will need support from the others.

Well there we have it

he wants you to die for him

make your own choices

but the intrepid is not suited to tanking with ANY commander

your role in a science cruiser is to make use of your science ship to take a role
you can Choose to heal and repair or you can choose to distract and dazzle or even to take command

the one thing you can't do effectively is tank

don't try

According to sollvax, he thinks tanking should be left to Tacticals. Oh, and that Science has no place in this game.

you have me confused with someone else

Science has a role
but only if its allowed to play it

Science is the C+C node
the person incharge mostly

in otherwords when the plan is made the sci should be the one assigning duties

Cruisers are there to protect and defend others
Escorts are there to intercept attacks and ESCORT slower ships

And in a fast gunship role

but science ships with their sensors and better disruption powers
they are there to provide countermeasures and ORDERS
you remember those >?
what members of starfleet are supposed to obey

Toiva, just read the thread I linked. Draw your own conclusions. Sollvax is very determined to make everyone conform to his views of how everyone should be playing this game.
