but the intrepid is not suited to tanking with ANY commander
your role in a science cruiser is to make use of your science ship to take a role
you can Choose to heal and repair or you can choose to distract and dazzle or even to take command
the one thing you can't do effectively is tank
I can't tell you how many times the main tank has died in an STF, so I hop right on in with my non-tanking Nebula. And guess what? Not only did I tank better, but I debuffed the crap outta the tactical cube/boss, while throwing out what few heals I have to my escort buddies. My science ship is still steady at 3k dps, whilst being an engineer in a science vessel. It's not too shabby. Oh, and I had to tank a tactical cube for four minutes by myself, due to a crazy team situation, and not once did I fall below 70% (I only have on hazard emitter on my build). Built right, a science vessel can tank just as well as any cruiser. You just can't hull tank.
Having said that, I think the best route for any science vessel to go, in order to be very effective and synergize well with their skills, is to roll a torpedo boat. Sensor scan is a great debuff for hulls, and tachyon beams can drain shields very well. Throw in a theta vent console for 3million credits, and you don't have to worry much about enemy shields in PvE. While I feel more like the "oh, sh*t" button for my fleet STFs, when things go ****-up due to a sudden disconnect/mistake, in PUGs I feel like a god among insects.
Sure, science is nerfed because a tactical in an escort pumps out so much dps that CC is generally worthless in PvE. Sure, it's incredibly situational, due to said dps negating any singular debuffs to the end boss. And yeah...your lack of tactical stations means assimilate ship is going to be your worst nightmare. But, at least you can say that you fly some of the coolest looking, most well-rounded, and best team-playing ship type that's in the galaxy.
Fyi, I'm an engi in a nebula, having tossed aside my 5k+dps escort because it was soooooo booooooring.
Well, I'm happy Sollvax and Matridunadan1 had fun.
Anyway, to all of you, thanks for the replies, didn't expect so many so soon.
What I see for now is that apparently, given my skillset (that pretty much rules out a serious torp boat), I would be of most use in what you call "Command and control", basically doing anything necessary, coordinating,...
Hmm, I'll take a look at all those tractor abilities.
Which do you think would be particularly useful abilities for this role? I think it's basically the most difficult part I could take in a team (unless everyone is really good at what he does, then I would have next to nothing to do. ).
(Just btw. I can shield tank as well in my Intrepid as in my oddy, but unlike in my oddy, bleedthrough is a problem. I got popped a couple times while keeping all shield facings near full.)
TOIVA, Toi Vaxx, Toia Vix: Bring in the Allegiance class Toi'Va, Ti'vath, Toivia: Design that long overdue Tier 5 C-Store Raptor Tae'Va, T'Vaya, To'Var: Give us Asylums for Romulans
Elites get to the point where in any ship, the only thing that kills you is a crit heavy plasma torp or maybe the elite tactical cube. And really, at that point, you have 5 ships that can heal the target.
I play science on both fed and kdf.
Original Poster, you made a good choice with the Intrepid. You can heal and CC.
If you are PvEing, you dont need the armor console.
Tips for surviving in ANY ship.
Shield Distribution Officers
Borg Engine, Borg Deflector, Borg Console
Maco/Honour Guard shield
Emergency power to shields I and II.
Distributing your shields.
3x purple shield distribution doffs basically gives you an instant full shields.
3 Piece borg procs will heal your shields when you need it, and top off any hull heals you have of your own. The MACO shield adds 10% energy weapon resistance.
Chaining 2 emergency power to shields gives you about 20% shield resists, plus shield power increasing your resistance another 10%.
Distributing your shields can either be done by manually clicking the ship icon, or more efficiently, by binding the command to another keyboard button. Im amazed at how many people dont distribute their shields, so I thought I would throw this out there.
Tactical team is a must in pvp, but not in pve.
With 24 Impulse, you should be at maximum defence as well.
Thats all without any BOFF abilities.
Here is what I use.
Well it was more for sollvax, since apparently he cant survive in an intrepid.
As for damage. Some options are (if you dont already run them)
-Borg Distruptor Dual Beam banks
-A torpedo build. 3 torpedoes and 2 purple doffs (Cygone a fellow science tested it extensively to find this to be the layout that gives the maximum number torpedos at the cost of only 2 doffs)
-High Particle generators with photonic shock III and 2 photonic officers (15k AoA, knockback and 4 second stun every 30 seconds? Yes please)
-2x torpedo spread
-Attack pattern Beta
-Maximum weapons power
-3 rear Turrets
-Tricobalt (although thats more for pvp giving the finishing blow)
-Tetryon Glider from the 2 piece omega
Using the Omega Deflector is good for getting crits as well since it boosts your accuracy. It also gives you particle generators which help shockwave and charged particle burst, and sensors points for scans. A scan + Beta + Disruptor proc means they are taking a hell lot more damage then the tool tips say. And thats just on your end. Coordinate when Tac Fleet is up with team mates.
There's a PSW build like Hyprodimus said, or you could load up on CC like Gravity Well (with doff), Tractor Beam (with doff) and TBR. While iffy at best in PVP (or so I've read), you will be a high-speed area-controlling team-butt-saver in STFs, with slots left for counters and heals besides. Load with either 6 BAs and FAW and be an almost-cruiser, or a mix of DBBs and turrets with a torp and be an almost-escort, with more creative options than the other two. Not quite max efficiency, but lots of fun and a long way from 'useless.'
As the proud user of an Intrepid myself, I can tell you that it's totally capable of dishing out the kind of damage that you're looking for. I personally use a modified version of Cygone's Intrepid build (it's on the forums, and I really recommend looking at his advice for both Intrepids and Nebulas. Find the Intrepid build here -- there's a link to the Nebula build in there as well).
Basically, the idea is to focus on two main tactics:
1) Drain the enemy's shields. Use tachyon beams, duty officer enhanced tractor beams, and charged particle bursts with reckless abandon. Throw in some shield targeting, and your enemies will be driven before you, shieldless and hopeless.
2) Bombard the enemy with ridiculous swarms of photon torpedoes. Mount two (or three, depending on your enemy) photon launchers forward. Chain high yield torpedo 1 and 2, along with 2-3 rare or better projectile weapons duty officers, to unleash a torrent of torpedoes nearly worthy of the Armitage console. Without the cooldown.
For energy weapons, I recommend tetryon turrets aft or even disruptors.
The link I provided goes into a lot more detail regarding skill points and so forth, but those are the basics. I've had a lot of success in Elite STFs, in supporting and damage-dealing roles. This thing is great at PvE, and it's a lot of fun in PvP, too.
