Hello,
I'm a free to player, so I've been grinding away to get dilithium to trade for C-points on the exchange. It takes HOURS to get to any amount that's worth having. I've been thinking about buying the Thunderchild so I can get the Point defence console. But I don't want to dump 800 c-points (and TONS of time) into it if I won't like it.

My question to you all is, is the PDS console worth buying? Is it effective? Does it help in PVP?

thanks in advance

I don't believe it is. The Armitage's Torpedo Point Defense is (Power of Torp Spread 3, unlimited target acquisition, and 360 degree arc).

Problem: Only Armitage can use it.

That said, I'd get the Antimatter Spread. More expensive, but you'd get a whole lot more use out of it.

The PDS is absolutely worth it if you want an EZ-mode button for clearing torps, carrier spam, SB24 stuff, etc. In an escort it's extra nice because what else were you going to take in the Sci slot anyway.

In PvP it's far less useful (its role as an anti-carrier system is muted by the fact that you can't reduce the lengthy PDS cooldown while carrier spam is endless and has means at its disposal to make it even more endless).

Its a lot of fun to use and can be a behind-saver in the right circumstances (and a game-breaker in the few shuttle missions). I put it on all my Fed ships, though I only do PVE so can't tell you if its much for PVP beyond maybe clearing carrier spam for a few seconds. That said with a 3-minute cooldown and a very short range it isn't a game-changer, just a fun toy for shredding waves of small ships. If its that significant an investment for you, its probably not worth it. Keep saving for an admiral-level ship you'll get more use out of, or some extra character slots to boost your refining capability, and wait till Season 6 to see what that does to the dilithium markets and such.

I think they are talking about the point defense phaser, that being said I like it...its a nice little console and I would say its good. I would say by far definitely feds best offensive console. (not hard to say though since we only have like three or four.)

absolutely , its a great console that gives you a lot of options , even if you dont use it for cleaing fighters away , if you close to say , 5k or so and pop it alongside fire at will or cannon rapid fire, it can add a respectable ammount to your firepower

that and it murders probes in khitomer accords

can be handy (I have it mounted on a couple of my ships for the purpose of removing the annoying fighters that keep appearing in some missions)

In pvp I can't tell you (ships its on not used for pvp)

but for a mere 800 cps its a really good way to clear mines

it's good when used in tandem with the Armitage's TPD console.

my armitage uses the Point Defense Console and Cannon Spread 1 to knock out the shields of a lot of ships in its front arc. then unleashes the Torp Console along with my own torp high yield or torp Spread at them.... lots and lots of torps and explosions can kill large groups at once.

while it's best against Fighters/shuttles.... it's also pretty deadly against the Borg Probe's in STFs.

Yeah, the Phaser PDS is amazing when paired with the phaser relays tac consoles and the Vent Theta Radiation console. I removed the Photorp PDS console since I prefer Quantums.

I mount it on my shuttles for the small ship missions and vault event, it's stupidly overpowered in those situations but that's why I love it >_<
