A couple of more suggestions.

These probably require some hardcore coding.

I suggest integrating the "tactical view" more with the bridge view. At the very least, while on the bridge or a deck, you can be en-route somewhere. It's silly you can't be on your ship while flying somewhere.

But it would really be cool to click on your captain's chair while in bridge mode, and then the camera rotates around behind him and zooms into the viewscreen in a smooth transition to tactical mode.

There could be a first-person mode this way, so you don't see your own ship, just what's in front (or you could see in another direction by rotating your view, but you still wouldn't see your ship, maybe just parts of it like the nacells). First-person mode would be awesome for escorts trying to line up cannons, or even for cruisers lining up a broadside (with the first-person cam fixed to the direct left for example).

You could switch between 1st person and 3rd person with a keystroke.

One controllable game avatar that either wears the humanoid skin OR the starship skin but never both at the same time. (There were some issues early on at release where the client would be confused about which skin it should show and we had small ships inside ESD and large people standing out in space.)

Either your controllable avatar is on a ground map in humanoid form walking around or in a space map flying around but never both at the same time.

Your client software on your computer sends information about your avatar and it's current status/skin to the server which in turn relays that information to other players client software so they can see your avatar and be able to interact with it based on the "skin" of the avatar.

I know simple logic can be a "silly" thing, but game engines are programmed that way.

What he said.

Can we please stop beating the dead targ, here? We've already been told no, and we've already been told why, more times than I can remember.

They might, maybe, someday put in some way of allowing intersector "travel" like this. Highly unlikely, but theoretically possible as long as you're willing that your ship does not actually appear to others in sector space. Cryptic has lots of good reasons not to go there.

In mission space? Not going to happen, ever.

What in the world does this have to do with my original post? I mean it's like you didn't even read OP.

He did. That's the answer. Sorry if you don't understand it.

This has been beat to death. It can;t happen with how the game engine currently is and would require a complete rewrite of the code, not just some code as you suggest.
