A Patrol Escort with 4 front DHC's = mutha#&@$ing overpowered... (not that I would complain.) Don't get me started on any other ships.

Which is probably a part of the reason why there are Fleet Ships instead of Fleet Ship upgrades where we purchase this item that adds the bonuses of having a Fleet Ship.

It would be nice to have, but very difficult and time consuming.
Not necessarily, it doesn't have to have any kind of visual upgrade. Sure it's the lazy thing to do, but it may be the most effective.

Should this become our new battle song?

I never said that. I was trying to stop a potential flame war. -_-

So inhumane superweapons, mass murder, and canon nonsense is okay, but speedos are too much for some people.

Not talking about visual upgrades. Each ship has the visual component and their stats like amount of consoles, hull, bridge officer layout, etc. The stats are fixed and to change them requires using a different model or altering the Game Engine.

Might be interesting to see if Augmentations would work as a console. Use up a console slot to get an extra Bridge Officer or weapon.

That we know will work because they have things like Automated Defense Turret, which is a Tactical Console that gives you another weapon, albeit not another weapon slot.

And variations there of, like the Point Defense System, essentially one doozy of a short-range turret which can really fry just about anything if used correctly.

I think to keep it fair, this augmentation thing would have to be kept to maybe one a ship (like the Borg console), and it'd have to be a specific area console. Like if you wanted a weapon slot, you would have to use a tactical augmentation console.

I do kinda like the idea, I think it just needs to be fleshed out more.

Hindsight being 20/20, what should have happened was this:

Cryptic should have designed all ships as equals, at a high base stat level, well above Tier 5.

They should have then imposed a percentage debuff on ships.

Say:

50% reduction in stats and the effectiveness of consoles for T5 ships.
60% for T4.
70% for T3.
80% for T2.
90% for T1.

You could upgrade a ship by reducing its inherent debuff. (And certain ships like a Connie, could be restricted from this. And certain ships, like the TMP Connie, might get costume options altered or removed by the process. Heck, maybe you could upgrade the TOS Connie but the costume would be replaced by something that looks like the Exeter with a few telltale TOS nods in there like a modernized disc deflector dish and bussard collectors with a bit of animation in them.)

Now... The beauty is that by making T5 a 50% reduction in effectiveness, you can continue to apply smaller debuffs, allowing the power level of ships to continue to improve gradually.

And this can be tied to different things and doesn't require minting of a separate ship for every upgrade you do.

Hit max crafting? Take 2% off your debuff. Hit T5 in your fleet? Take your base debuff down to 45% from 50% for a Fleet Credit fee and buy additional costumes for Fleet Credits.
